: oil leak on new rebuilt engine
03-08-2009, 02:51 PM
This is Johannes from Canada. I just finished putting the motor in and I wanted to start her up. She fired no problem and ran good for about 10 - 15 sec. Then I heard what sounded like a gurgle and she decided to throw out all the oil. I turned her off right when i heard the gurgle, looked under the car and oil was everywhere. Seems like it comes from behind or above the starter. Must be a big hole cause all the oil was on the floor in no time. Any idea what it could be? And do u think I messed up the motor??

Oil pressure sensor???
Didi you make sure everything was back where it is suppose to be??

Either oil sending unit or oil plug from behind the started , shouldnt of hurt a thing if you were watching the oil psi like people should be with starting a new engine the first time

The oil pressure sensor is ok, checked that first, looks like its coming right from behind the starter, I took the starter off, and moved it around a bit, I cant really see but it feels like there is a hole in the block right behind the starter. I let my buddy blow some air into the oil filler on the valve cover and i could feel the air coming out from the hole. Seems like there is thread in the hole as well.
So I need a new plug for that hole then??
The oil pressure was still up when I turned the car off.

Yes it just takes a plug in that hole , some use that for oil to the turbo , just install a shallow plug in there and your good to go

Should I get a new one from the Stealership or is it ok, to get one from the junkyard, or even from a hardware store?
And are those plugs on all zetecs or just on the SVTs??
03-09-2009, 12:42 PM
just go to a hardware store i cant remember if its a 1/4in npt or a 1/8npt
03-09-2009, 04:45 PM
really? Wont that be to weak? And would they have the right thread seize?
03-09-2009, 05:24 PM
No it will not be weak and yes those sizes are pretty standard at stores just make sure its npt

Just went to the dealer and I found out that there are 5 of those holes. Now I am wondering if all of them need a plug, or if you (Tom) just didn't put that on plug.
Please let me know, there are a couple of plug holes where the flywheel connects to the crank and i don't want to get oil in my clutch and everything. So let me know if there are other holes that need a plug.

you would need to call Tom and ask if there is plugs in those holes
03-11-2009, 10:10 AM
I would say there all there but the one for the sending unit and the one for the turbo , put that one in and start it beck up

Thanks for clarifying, I saw one more on the back side of the motor that was there so I was hoping you were gonna say that.

I tried calling you a couple of times but cant get a hold of you, guess ur in Mexico, hope the move wasn't to bad.
But that's not what I am writing about. I am still looking for the right plug for the whole behind the starter. I tried 2 different plugs from the dealer but they were both the wrong seize. And the guy at the parts department doesn't know what plug I am talking about. I am getting pretty frustrated cant believe my car isn't running cause a tiny 2 dollar part is missing.
Is there anyway u could give me the parts number of that plug? The parts guy says there is like 10 different plugs on the motor and his computer system doesn't show where it goes just shows parts numbers.

Just got of the phone with the guys at Hilbish ford. They said it would take 5 days to get it to them and probably another week till it gets to Canada.
That's a long time, so I was wondering if you have one lying around, if you could sent that to me?
I would pay for the part and shipping. Just wanna get it as fast as possible.

Ok, will try to talk to mike tomorow he wasnt in when i called. I actually just went to the hardware store and found T H I S (http://plumbing.hardwarestore.com/52-330-brass-caps-and-plugs/square-head-barstock-plug-245878.aspx).
Its made out of Brass, but it fits perfectly, do you think its strong enough and ok to use?
03-19-2009, 06:25 AM
yes thats what i have been talking about it will work just fine

Ok I just picked T H I S (http://www.nitrousexpress.com/product-details.php?id=430) from a local performance shop. It fits perfect plus looks a bit stronger than the brass plugs. Iam gonna put some thread lock on it too so it never comes out again, until I get a turbo ;-).
