I am completely aware of how a flash device works, however I am very ignorant when it comes to the term "locked", so I have a few questions.
I recently ordered an XCal3 via FS with the base FS tune on it. My question, for those in the know, or those who have purchased the same is this; Did I order a "Locked" unit?
What constitutes a flash device as "Locked" or "Unlocked"?
Am I looking at this the wrong way? Is it not the device but the tune itself that is locked? Meaning that I in no way can modify that tune, but with the proper software can create my own and use the flasher to push the new tune to the ECU?
With my flasher that I recieved from FS can I, at a later date, use the unit to push a dyno tune or even mayve Toms tune into the ECU?

The tuner becomes locked to your vehicle as soon as you download the stock calibration and upload your new tune.
the tune itself is locked by focussport, nobody can look at or modify that tune other than them. That's the essence of the .ll3 file. You may have some user-selectable parameters on the X3, but you cannot do any real tuning with it using the Advantage software.
What you ordered is a tune that was made for your car's PCM "strategy". You tune will only work on PCM's with that strategy. And only focussport can modify it.
At a later date you can purchase the Advantage software and make a whole new tune yourself, or you can have Tom tune it. The device is locked to your car until you go back to stock, you can upload as many new tunes as you want until then.
Did I cover everything?

You hit every question on the head. Thanks a ton for the info. I was very confused as to how SCT would lock the device and prevent someone from handing it over to a friend. This answers it.
The tune itself is essentially a Read Only file. Something we can not open or muddle with.
X3 is linked to my vehicle code and can only be used on a JFA8, once I download my calibration it becomes locked to my VIN im assuming.
This keeps me from handing it off to all my friends who have JFA8 codes. Very nice way of securing the devices.
My only other question/worry; I have read of people wiping the ECU.. what is the probability of this happening with a X3? The posts I have read were having it happen with the Diablo tuner.

actually this is where some people get tripped up, the device itself is not stuck to a JFA8, only your tune is. AFAIK you can unlock the device and use it with a different tune on a different strategy just fine.
The diablo wipe has never actually been explained on the forum (I have asked Tom to explain it a few times now, and my friend asked diablo directly when it happened to him... they wouldnt tell him), but it is usually attributed to a voltage drop during a flash. As a precaution, I turn off my amplifiers and pull my fuel pump fuse while loading a tune to reduce the load on my battery.
