: Attention 08/09' Owners

I took my car back to the dealer less than a month after I bought it and pointed out the damage to the paint I was noticing on the rocker panel. I was told there was nothing they can do.
Well they can't give you that answer anymore. This is from Ford's Technical Service Bulletin #09-3-6 published on 2/9/09
FORD: 2008-2009 Focus
Some 2008-2009 Focus vehicles may experience paint damage or road abrasion on the rocker panel and on the side of the vehicle located slightly ahead of the rear tires on both 2 door and 4 door models. This has been reported in geographical areas that commonly experience snow and ice conditions and use various forms of traction enhancers.
NOTE: PER THE WARRANTY AND POLICY MANUAL, PAINT DAMAGE CAUSED BY CONDITIONS SUCH AS CHIPS, SCRATCHES, DENTS, DINGS, ROAD SALT, STONE CHIPS OR OTHER ACTS OF NATURE, ARE NOT COVERED UNDER THE NEW VEHICLE LIMITED WARRANTY. HOWEVER, PAINT ABRASION AT THE DOG LEG AREA CAUSED DUE TO THE ABOVE CIRCUMSTANCES IS A UNIQUE CONDITION ON THE FOCUS AND, AS A RESULT, REPAIRS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR BASIC WARRANTY COVERAGE.
Basically what they are supposed to do is repaint the damaged area and then cover it with clear-bra like material to prevent future damage.
I'd be there today, but I just installed side skirts which cover the damaged area and I have ordered "clear-bra" material to cover the area in question on my new skirts.
Look at the paint down low just in front of the rear fender well and I'll bet you see the damage that's occurring. Get it fixed now and get it fixed for free.
02-13-2009, 07:28 PM
Strange.....since this has never been a problem on earlier years, does this condition imply Ford has cheapened their paint formula? And what about the rest of the paint somewhere down the line.......[:(]
02-13-2009, 07:30 PM
This must be a fairly new TSB cause i didnt see it listed when I printed all the other ones out a month or so ago
oh snap just saw the date my bad
02-13-2009, 07:33 PM
I don't think it's due to a cheapened paint formula. I think it's due to the new design on the 08/09 and some where down the line they failed to notice the amount of crap the front wheels are throwing back there. I put some splash guards up front and that seemed to help but still didn't stop it all.
02-13-2009, 08:18 PM
I *think* I know what area you are talking about but can you take a picture and circle it?
I haven't actually looked at it yet though, but I've seen dark spots on the corners next to the wheel. I wash my car like 2-3+ times a week anyways so I never bothered checking yet.
I do notice something about the paint else where, maybe cheapened paint who knows. I already have a few paint chips up front from pebbles and sand. I dunno but I don't notice that on my mom's car maybe I'm on the highway more than her. Who knows.
02-13-2009, 08:31 PM
Sure, here check the area circled in red. (mine has a skirt covering the damage and I'm going to put some "clear-bra" material on the skirt so it doesn't get damaged)
02-13-2009, 08:38 PM
hmm I guess I'll have to take a peek tomorrow morning
I was actually more concerned with this part
so it's only the rear side?
so that's what the clear stuff is. My friend and I noticed some sort of clear adhesive on his Scion xD and its on that same area, we were confused about what it was but just walked away before we hurt ourselves trying to figure out what it was haha
02-13-2009, 08:50 PM
I haven't had a problem behind the wheel, it's in front of the rear wheel and I assume it's because of the stuff the front wheels are throwing back there.
02-13-2009, 09:04 PM
How the heck does the front wheel manage to throw something to hit something that far back and nothing else in between?
I get stuff sprayed all over area right behind my front wheels though Sometimes it goes as high as the top my my window
02-13-2009, 09:08 PM
Good question, but I can't figure where else it would be coming from.
02-14-2009, 10:24 PM
Ok I got to take a peek at it today
I sort of understand how it would hit it, the part lumps out more to become wider.
But I found no damage there, yet.. BUT there IS damage on my doors[thumbd] I don't think I saw any on the right side but on the left side theres a few light scratches on my front and rear door somewhere in the middle
05-20-2009, 03:29 AM
still waiting on a call from my local dealer. they only have one rental and they said they'd call me as soon as they have it for a few days.. no call. i'll go by tomorrow. i already had them special part for it.. didn't even have it. didn't even know about the tsb. took like 15 mins to get it found too.
05-20-2009, 11:34 AM
i was wondering about that i have huge cracks on the top of my bumper in front of the passenger headlight and we did not do that and more and more pops up and there deep too is that what it is
05-20-2009, 11:42 AM
I gave them the TSB and the dealer's collision center is ordering the stuff
I think I'll go in next week to get it fixed
What's up with your bumper? That's not part of this specific TSB
05-20-2009, 10:14 PM
my bumper on the pass side started getting cracks like deep ones in the paint like the paint is cracking i dont know if i can get it fixed by ford because i did not do that and rocks did not do that
05-20-2009, 10:52 PM
well bring it in and ask!
My mom's Camry started getting these bubbles in the paint on the bumper and stuff and even though her warranty just expired by like 3 months they had it repainted for her
05-21-2009, 11:43 PM
okay i will tommrow
08-08-2009, 01:25 PM
So glad I found this.
I have this problem on my 2008, and only a year old. Another few months and the areas noted will be to the metal, looks hideous!
Going to go today or early next week to start the process with Ford. I hope I don't get the hassle that some had to go through as per blogs and complaints found through Google.
08-08-2009, 01:29 PM
I went to the dealer, they printed out the TSB and told me to book an appointment to the body shop next week for warranty service.
I have the 3 page TSB scanned and can share on request.
No attach document option of FF?
08-26-2009, 01:03 AM
Good question, but I can't figure where else it would be coming from.
Thanks Brad for the info. Just went out to the garage to check out my 09 with 7,000 miles. No damage yet but i do see where your coming from on how the damage occurs. I also noticed my rear door, lower part about 6 inches from the dogleg is taking on road debris as well. I have a feeling this will be a major problem for all of us. My guy at the dealer is cool and never turns away a TSB request from me so ill have him order the part asap. In the meantime, i suggest all of our snowbelt friends wax that area quite frequently to try and minimize the damage thats to come. Thanks again! [pray]
09-20-2009, 11:53 PM
been turned away before for this problem.. im sure they're gonna love to see me back ;)
09-21-2009, 02:12 AM
they have to fix it... i just can't do without my car for the three days they say it will take to do it.... may just do it in the spring after the winter.. let a little more damage be done
09-21-2009, 05:09 AM
Thanks for letting us know. I didn't see anything when I washed it last week but will be on the look out.
09-21-2009, 01:38 PM
I have damage so I went in a little more than a week ago. They had no clue what I was talking about, luckily I had the TSB. They shut up and I get my rental and it painted on Thursday of this week!
09-21-2009, 02:20 PM
Posted via FF Mobile there is one stipulation tho. It is that you must live in an area that uses some post of traction control during the winter. ie salt gravel sand
11-25-2009, 10:55 AM
I looked at mine the other day, black paint.. I can see all the white specs everywhere. So has anybody succeeded on getting this fixed?
11-25-2009, 12:19 PM
LOL I went to a dealership to inquire and the guy said "How did you get this bulletin? You need a Ford login to get this". He was all pissed off.. Told me I'd have to talk to his manager tomorrow.
11-25-2009, 05:28 PM
Lol just say "don't worry about it and just fix it."
My place didn't question it they told me to bring it to their body shop down the road and the body shop manager is the guy that works at the desk there and he took it, looked at it, made a copy, and fixed it after I set up an appointment.
They adhere a big friggin clear plastic over it though
11-25-2009, 07:30 PM
its like clear bra which i think i stated... but its barely noticable.. better than having a bunch of paint chips having to be repaired every winter
11-25-2009, 08:09 PM
Barely noticeable?? o.O
They are pretty damn noticeable man [poke]
11-25-2009, 08:15 PM
the clear bra is noticeable?
11-25-2009, 08:25 PM
It was fine before but now you can just see the outline of the thing much easier than before. It's no big deal but it's just there
11-25-2009, 08:51 PM
Hey Brad, where did you get your 3D Carbon body kit & around how much did it all come together after paint?
11-25-2009, 08:58 PM
think he spent around 1k to 1.5K. after paint..... don't remember tho... and got it online somewhere......
11-29-2009, 01:29 AM
Okay so who's got a shot of the car with the clear bra on it?
12-02-2009, 08:59 AM
Yeah, I was gonna say.. can you please snap a pic man?
The dealer where I bought my car is going to be fixing it for me and installing those clear things on it. My paint is black though, if it's THAT noticeable I don't know if I want to do it.
12-02-2009, 09:16 AM
Ill take a pic this afternoon and load it tonight when I get home.
12-02-2009, 09:31 AM
oh awesome man, what do you think about it's noticeability?
and what would you think of it on black paint?
12-02-2009, 11:20 AM
Can you tell, Yes. But thats if you are looking for it. Mainly you can see the line if you look at from an angle. Its not terrible. And Id rather have it on especially as Winter comes around.
Dunno bout black. as long as they put it one well it should look fine.
12-02-2009, 06:01 PM
Damn, I see the pics from Phokus.. I think the border would show like crazy on black paint.. Damned if I do and damned if i don't :(
There is his thread with pics, I'm guessing when it's really clean you can see around the border huh?
12-02-2009, 09:21 PM
My car is black... Can the bra be removed if they insist on it putting it on as part of the repaint?
I plan on getting mud guards for the front.
12-03-2009, 06:30 PM
My cars black and I had it done well worth the time if it's warrantied... It looks fine on black and doesn't stick out at all besides the line from where it starts.. Look at an Audi they have it done stock n it'll look the same as that
12-04-2009, 08:41 AM
Are you able to snap a couple pics by any chance Marine? I would really appreciate it just so I have an idea on the black.. Rep for you@!
01-27-2010, 04:54 PM
Just so you know Ford has re-released this TSB under the number #09-17-5
01-27-2010, 04:59 PM
Good to know.
I had mine done not long ago. It's not as bad as I thought it was going to be.
