: OMFG [gunfire] .DLF

so since thread titles cant show smileys here is what i wanted to say
I just spent my entire Saturday morning trying to get a .DLF onto my xcal2. For the newbs, that is an on-device datalogging config file.
At first i was getting this error, which if you have ever set up datalogging on your computer im sure you know is the MOST FRUSTRATING ERROR you have EVER seen,
System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
I updated to livelink 4.41, and still got the error.
Checked my COM port, it was wrong, fixed it, still got the error.
So, i tried to do it with the xcal2 plugged into the car and computer. It didnt work.
tried a shorter file name. didnt work.
tried to put .dlf at the end of the filename. didnt work.
then finally i checked the box for "PID's only" and it put the file on the xcal2. It worked! or DID it?????
Now when I go to set up datalogging, i go to this file, press select, and nothing happens. it doesnt go to the select PID screen like it should.
What am I doing wrong?

On device datalogging with the X2 is a pain. The X3 is much easier as we redesigned how it works.
First, are you sure you are selecting the add livelog file to X2 and not the one for the X3/LW?
Second, you HAVE to choose your processor size as well as enter in something for the name AND description. If you leave one blank or do not select the processor size you will have issues.
Third, the firmware on your X2 has to support on device datalogging. The earlier ones did not. What firmware is on your device right now?

1. Yes i am doing "add livelog file to xcal2 device" or whatever, NOT doing add to X3.
2. Yes I am selecting 216K EEC-V. I am typing the following:
filename - basics.DLF
description - basics
I have also tried them both in all CAPS to no avail
3. im on 1.14. A long long time ago I got it working. I have done on-device before using this xcal2 and this firmware... But for some reason it doesnt want to work anymore.

You said that you tried with the laptop in the car and it still failed?
If so, there is a driver issue or in that case you didn't have the key on. Are you able to transfer tune files to your device? If not, check/reinstall the drivers for the X2.

yep, here is the order i did things
plug xcal to computer
plug xcal to car
turn car key on
open configuration (i have the PIDs using my strategy SBAF6 saved to a configuration)
check the checkmarks next to PIDs
load livelog file to xcal2 device
click 216k eec-v
Nothing has changed since you and I messed with my tune a couple months ago. I had no problems loading tunes back then.
I can datalog on the computer just fine.

read my edit, i actually plug the xcal to the car and THEN turn the key on.

i will reinstall the drivers next chance i get maybe that will help.
thanks so far.

I know you tried it both ways, but you don't have to add the .dlf extension. Also, the process is meant to be done while not connected to a vehicle. If you are trying to add a dlf file to the device that should always be done while not connected to a vehicle. If you are going to use a laptop in the car then do that which is pass through.
Save your dlf file and email it to me (there is a check box in there for "save to a file"; check that and save it)

ok i just sent it.
im going to try to do it outside the car one more time. I dont think i ever tried it with the PIDs only option checked. if that doesnt work im gonna reload the drivers.

ok just tried it in my living room and I get to the same point, it doesnt go to the PID selection when i go to "setup capture" on the xcal itself. I hit select when the screen says "basics / SEL to choose" and nothing happens.

So, Mike and I figured it out. Even though I'm still not quite sure what I did differently.
At some point before I posted I tried to load up some DMR's (not PID's to my dismay) without using the configuration file... and never got it to work.
but this time, when I did not use the configuration file, it did work.
there is also suspicion that you have to open livelink before plugging in the xcal.
But Mike thinks its the config file issue.
long story short, if you want to load up a .DLF on your xcal2, DO NOT use a configuration file!!! [wiggle]

sounds like you got as aggrivated as me the other nite. i kept getting error after error with the updater and the livelink software.

yup i usually dont mess with anything SCT unless i have a nice 2-3 hour block to deal with it. A lot of it is user error on my part but man those object faults are a pain in the ass to diagnose.

good info pete, thanks!
