2010 ford will have the "my key". This I think is a great option if you are a parent with teen drivers. here's the link.http://jalopnik.com/5059406/ford-nanny-key-for-teen-drivers-limits-vehicle-speed-radio-volume

I've got a better idea.....don't let your kid drive the family car at all. Don't buy the kid a car. Tell him he gets a car when he buys it himself, and pays for his own insurance.

What we really need is a "smart key" that works on anyone driving the car....[:)]

I agree. The only reason I was able to drive in HS was because of my parents already having a 3rd car...i paid for the insurance and gas, eventually saving enough to buy the fofo 2-3 yrs later.

Finally, Ford has provided a way for parents to shrug off more responibility with their teen drivers.

"Oh go ahead and take the car, no worries, it has MY KEY to protect my baby"

everyone can complain about this, but it's not a bad idea. i agree, make kids pay for crap themselves. my dad bought the focus for me, so that takes away a little of my credibility, lol, though in my defense i never new/expected it to happen. mom and step-dad said "you want a car, get a job, buy it yourself, you're paying insurance and everything." lol, got a job as soon as i turned 16, and on top of that along with mowing yards and babysitting, i saved up. of course, dad ended up with other ideas, i wasn't going to turn down a free car, who would? lol

but anyways, for those parents who allow kids to drive their cars, how can this not be a good idea? my mom eventually started trusting me a bit more and more, enough to take her car out from time to time before i had a car. just because parents allow kids to drive their cars doesn't mean their not responsible, and this key is just one more way to help assure that there's a little less chance the kids do something stupid. no, it can't completely control how they drive, but at least their speed can be limited.

you cannot drive fast...
but you can still be drunk...
how about something like "My Alarm"...
when they detect the alcohol content in air and make the car won start?

Same here! I was 19 when I got my license. I had a car before then but it was park in my grandparents garage with no tags. It was an 85 volvo that sat in a family members yard for over two years without moving. When I got my license my parents paid for the emissions test and I had to find a job ASAP to keep it.

One thing missing...
Where's the alarm for cell phone use/texting??!!

We've had 3 high school kids killed within one year because they pulled out in front of someone while they were texting.
Now, everyone's crying for lower speed limits. [?|]
Speed was not the cause of these crashes.

Off soap box for now...

You bring up a great point!
texting has become the main problem with teens.

Still don't understand why they havent developed this, I know there was some research going on like 4 years ago. But why not a key with a freakin breathalizer on it. DUUUHHHHHH put that on the MY KEY option. You take the keyfob that looks like a breathalizer, blow into it, and if your over the legal limit the car is not going to start.

DO IT FOR ALL CARS, AND ALL CAR COMPANYS. like seriously you don't think car companies can get a great working system going if they work together. We'd have so many less people dying from drunk driving cause they won't be able to go anywhere.

I agree, big brother mandates that we have to have all kinds of crap in our car now. I hear that in a few years all new car will have to have tire pressure monitors. What the ..... . . Another option that I have to pay for. Ok well I say all new cars must have some sort of breathalyzer in them. And when people start complaining about there rights, Well its my right to be able to drive down the road and not be killed by some inconsiderate drunk that decided my life and everyone else out there, is not as important as his or her buzz. When U drink and drive and kill someone its 1sr degree, i.e. planed murder.

For every technology that exists, counter technology already exists, or will be invented in a short time.

TPS is already a must for cars, it started in 2008 I believe. Its not really an option you have to pay for its basically standard like airbargs and everything else. The price is not large enough to effect your pockets really anyway.

I searched the breathalyzer thing and Volvo was working on a prototype for this kind of thing. But who knows, maybe we don't have such a simple technology in cars cause its a conspiracy, and they want people to continue drinking and driving so the money from it keeps coming in. I'm going to write a letter to Ford...we should all do it....hold on I'm making a new thread.

most cars have TPS, my focus came standard with it... its a lil stupid, they are mandating TPS but u can still buy a car without antilock brakes!!! id rather have ABS then stupid TPS... if your that stupid of a driver to notice hey my left tire looks a lil slack, maybe i should check it.
