: Duratec-ATX to MTX

ON HOLD

I've debated between myself for several weeks about this, and I've come to the conclusion, I'm going to swap my ATX for a MTX on my 2005 duratec 2.0.

I've read through the two main threads about the zetec swap. For the most part some things will be similar, and some things will of course be differnt.

The reason I am doing this.
(1). The ATX aint going to cut it... I'm in the process of turbo charging(8psi) and soon after that I am going to build the block to handle around 16 psi.
(2.) The ATX robs more power from your engine than you think... I've read several place that the average ATX robs anywhere from 10-20%.
(3.) I love a MTX, I don't know how to explain it, it just keeps me entertained.
(4.) I see it as a great bonding experience with my dad, where always looking for something to do together.

I will most likely go for an exedy stage 2, not sure how much stock can really handle.

As for the parts list, I'm sure its similar but not exactly what the zetec is. I will most likely pm Mike and see if he can't help me out, unless someone already knows the list.

Of course I will go junkyard hunting for some of the parts, I am hoping I can pick up the tranny for a good price.

Does anyone see a problem with doing this with the car about 2 and 1/2 feet off the ground, I was going to use my hoist to kinda drop the engine down. Also does anyone know where I can get and 05+ haynes manual, no local auto stores have it.

My Haynes manual is 00 to 05. It doesn't cover the 05 stuff very well, but it does have some info because of some 03's and 04's came with the duratec.

Yea, I flipped thru one, it covered the spi and zetec, but it only touched base on the duratec. :(

I'm going to keep a close eye out for a transmission on ebay. Hopefully when I get my parts list I can start shopping; I'd like to get this done by the end of October.

I will for sure keep this thread updated. The turbo is on hold until I get the swap finished, this way It won't be in the way, and when I have it tuned I can get rid of the codes its going to spit at me. I think I may have found a tranny with 20000 miles on it for 450, the best thing, its 30 mins from me... So, I will most likely call about it with int the next couple days.

Are you talking about the CPU? If so if I'm not mistaken it will just throw a code, a tune would fix that.

Just an update on the progress. I found a transmission that came off a 2007 no front end damag focus. I will most likely buy it within a week or two. I was going to buy it today until I realized I had a screw in one of my tires, so I decided to get some new rubber cause those are worn.

BTW, didn't you have your codes cleared with a tune?

illinipo
08-16-2008, 08:23 PM
no have not got a hold of my tuner yet, i will post in my thread when i get it taken care of (could be a while, these guys are terrible at returning phone calls/emails)

good luck with your tranny

cant wait to see this take shape. Honestly with that parts list it doesnt seem that bad.

illinipo
08-18-2008, 02:28 PM
nope not really too bad, just need a good solid 2 days to get it done. And dont expect to sleep or eat much for those 2 days.

definitely NOT a one person job tho...

The parts list isn't bad at all you just have to figure out what you need new and what can do used. I checked on a limited slip diferental for 570$

illinipo
08-19-2008, 08:39 AM
mine was $533.....

I'm going to do some searching and see what kinda deals I can't get... If ford racing had/has it my buddy has a 10% discount with them, but idk thats steep but worth every penny.

illinipo
08-19-2008, 10:15 AM
check with Mike@Hillbish, 10% over cost. Should be the same price as i got.

also see my thread for the other things you will need with the Torsen (bearings, etc). Also I have a thorough how-to in there... ive installed it twice now and it worked great both times.

I also have a shim kit for sale so dont bother buying one from the dealer i will sell you mine for less. The size I needed had two shims in the kit, so it is a complete kit.

yes it is steep, it hurt to make the purchase but I was smiling the entire time I was ordering [:D] TOTALLY worth every penny you spend (this coming from a guy who just did a 2-wheel peel through a turn on the way to work [;)])

TnFocus

Well, i'm going to start buying very soon. I seen in your thread where you machined a tool to press the bearing, but didn't you end up putting it on with a rubber hammer lol?

illinipo
08-19-2008, 10:41 AM
no, I had the tool on the bearing and hit the tool, making sure there was constant contact. It just wasnt going on with the press, needed some impact.

TnFocus
08-19-2008, 10:54 AM
God, I can't wait to get started on mine... Im def going with a torsen tho... I know it is worth every penny. Over the next weeks I'm going to start ordering, junkyard searching, and more research. Takin a week off work for the swap... just in case lol.

TnFocus

If everything goes as planned, I will be ordering my transmission this week. Once I have the transmission and have it disassembled, I will inspect the differential. If it is in good shape, I will most likely order a "Grip conversion kit" from Phantom Grip. I've seen it on here and in several tuner mags, including Project Car Vo. 07. I will keep everyone updated.

BTW! If you have shift cables, clutch master cylinder, or anything that can help me, for 2005+, let me know

illinipo
08-26-2008, 10:24 AM
master cylinder is ~30 bucks at hillbish

shift cables... those are harder to find. theyre over 100 bucks from Mike I think. so i would go look in a u-pull junkyard for a mtx Focus, 02.5+.

the phantom grip is a clutch-type lsd right? if so dont forget to add friction modifier to your fluid.

so whats the latest news on the project? Because I myself am interested in doing this swap with my 05 focus

I had some things come up and had to put it off to the side...

Hey, i've been around hondas for a while and the phantom grip kit has been renamed phantom slip, It just adds 2 blocks and 4 springs between your side gears inside your diff, basicaly you could do the same thing by shimming the side gears and the spider gears to take up the slack in the gear mesh, I've done this on an old ford 8" diff and it worked well for little to no money involved. just hate to see some one spend money on something that operates unpredictable, not sure but does OBX make a lsd for the focus? those units are well built just be sure to check the torque on the bolts that holds the case togather.

So I guess I'm gonna pick up where it was left off.

I've got a 2004 ZX5 2.3L ATX and I'm buying a daily driven 2003 ZX3 2.3L MTX and I'm gonna swap both trannies then sell the 2003 "ATX" to recoup the cost. Tranny swap for essentially $0. [headbang]

Why am I not just keeping the ZX3 and selling the ZX5?
1. I know everything about my car, bought it new
2. I've already got mods on mine
3. Mine has 94,000 miles while the 2003 has 160,000
4. I've got kids so I need the 4 doors

I'm buying the car within the next couple weeks and the swap will be in Jan/Feb.

I'll keep you posted. Hopefully I won't have things come up.

All Right! I've got two Foci in my driveway now. Another reason I'm keeping mine: the 2003 doesn't have leather or sunroof. I'll let yall know when I get ready for the swap.
