2.0L Zetec 135 ft-lb @4500rpm (2004)
2.0L Duratec 133 ft-lb @4250 rpm (2005, non-PZEV)
But how quickly do they reach decent torque? Can someone point me to their torque curves?
I want to know which 2.0 comes closer to matching the low-end torque of my 2004 SE sedan's 2.3L Duratec (149 ft-lb @4250rpm).
Or, maybe it's not the engine that makes the difference, but the gearing. In case the gearing was changed between 2004 and 2005: Which Focus hatchback with a 2.0L and automatic transmission has better low-end pickup: a 2004 or 2005?

Duratec engines have better torque and hp curves, otherwise Ford would probably be running aluminum block Zetecs instead.
Oh, I would not recommend the 05 body style- I own one. The 05-07 have lots of wind noise and road noise due to changes from the earlier body style. I ordered mine not knowing the changes would affect the interior sound level like it did. One of the reasons I looked at a Focus in the first place was because I drove one as a rental for 3 months and was very impressed with the quiet interior. After 05, Ford also changed the locations of the O2 sensors in the exhaust from the earlier models, and from what I've heard the ECU was changed also. Evidently, whatever changes were made give the later model cars better fuel economy from what I've read of other FF's experiences.

So the 2005 is a good-news (engine), bad-news (noise) choice. I guess I'll "focus" on the 2004, whose style I happen to strongly favor. I want white or yellow for safety, but perhaps I can think outside the box by getting black and having a detailer add orange and yellow striping. The ZX3, in particular, seems to be much easier to find in black than in white; yellow is out there, but buyers of yellow ZX3s seem to strongly favor the 5-speed manual.

I would think you would feel the torque in the duratec than the zetec, only because I have driven both of them in comparison and for test result of feelings.

Well if you find one that has the special northern (I see your NE) rust treatment, that will reduce the noise considerably.
Best thing to do is drive both of them. I know there's no shortage of roads up north that have loud pavement, so judge for yourself. Believe me, I wish I'd ordered the rust treatment now that I know what it is.
