well squirt finally did it. after fridays tsunami conditions for practice (open track for SEVEN! hours) and only running 1:22's with dying fuel pump, it did not look promising. sat. dawned clear and cool. enduro went off at 3:30, pitted at 4:38 with corded tire while in 3rd. went out on fresh rubber and car died on back straight and coasted for 1/2 mile. figured that was it until it caught again. amazingly we out lasted almost everyone else and despite losing the power steering at the end took a second.
Some like it wet:
Some like it hot:
Nice job, Gary. [thumb]
Did you find the culprit that caused the engine to die?
And, what happened to the power steering?
06-14-2004, 01:59 PM
we think there were 3 separate things going on. 1st fuel pump was dying causing sputter on uphills. fuel mileage (!) went way up with new pump we found sat a.m. at dealer about 22 miles away. however still cut out every time i caught the rumble strip in turn 6 leading us to think there is also a short somewhere. and to top that off, we may have water in the tank from refueling in torrential rain friday, that may have gotten into fuel cans. will no more after this weekend at vir. and power steering pump has leak on high pressure side. its not really meant to run hours on end at 5 to 7 thousand rpm! back to fuel pump-i was using a 1/4 tank for every 1/2 hour prctice friday in the rain when i was only running around 1:22 laps and keeping speed to no more than 100 on the straights due to aquaplaning issues on lousy tires. in saturdays race, was running a best of 1:12 and seeing 110-115 at times. used only 1/2 a tank for the race that ran over an hour. so though replacing it did not cure all problems, at least i was back to my usual 10 mpg at race speed.
power steering pump has leak on high pressure side.
So, the leak is at the pump itself?
Just asking, as during my first oil change I found THIS (http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16254) on my rack and pinion.[?|]
at least i was back to my usual 10 mpg at race speed.
Holy Cow! Maybe I better just stick to short ~2:00min AutoCross races.
Too bad about the fuel pump, though it does sound like electrical, not mechanical problem.
Personally, I hate trying to track down electrical gremlins.

i also hate electrical gremlins. have a feeling that its a loose ground somewhere. keep in mind, my battery is in the back, making things interesting with lots of extra wire. on the p/s-the eastern director of svtoa came out for the race. had same problem w/his. he replaced the line and still had leak. turns out ford, in its infinite wisdom, doesn't send the teflon outer seal with the line thats needed for repair. talked to one of our techs this a.m. and he said the seals go frequently on them. hopefully seal will be here tomorrow and we'll see if that fixes it. we are going to modify the pump to slow it down (basically take out the spring and cut 25% off) and run aeroquip lines soon. oops, sorry-no leak is in line or seal, not pump.
Encoded with DivX 5.11
Used my cheap little digi cam, so not the best quality. I tried to clean it up.

I haven't been to beaverrun yet, looks like a wide track....lots of quardrail ( body shiver). Those small little cars like the rain ?!
Does that clip have video?
I'm only getting the audio.
Sounds cool, but it would be nice to see.[;)]

bill, that little car loves the rain. that track is so new that adhesion is amazing. i put a self imposed limit of 95 on the back kinks and 100 on the front straight friday. above that i tended to aquaplane. i would have loved rain for the race. helps me with the higher power rwd cars. actually, adhesion was too good in the dry-ruined 3 v700 kuhmo race tires. down to the cord. and wd40-all i can get is the audio also. i would be more fustrated if i did not have an in car vid of the whole race. still would like to see it from the outside.
Yes, there is video. Update your video codec to DivX 5.11
Direct link (may or may not work): http://download.divx.com/divx/DivX511.exe

no matter what i get the "error writing" message. no pics.
I'm uploading a different version now, for those having troubles with DivX.
Also, its not the best video. Didn't have the best view from the pits.

still does not work for me.
Hey! Got to see that one. Cool!
Now, if only I could have seen more than a "flash" of Gary's car.[:(]
Sorry. Like I said, I didn't have the best view of the race from the pits (except for all the cars when they had to pit)
To make up for it, please accept these pictures. :)
Gary very carefully studying race footage:

Great pics! Even got the pit crew. [:D]
That's a VERY nice ride you've got there, Gary.[thumb]
I knew the front was dropped, but holy cow, does it ever show in the pictures.
How much camber are you running?
06-17-2004, 10:05 AM
3 neg front, 2 neg rear; 1/8 toe out front, 0 rear. and that's the good side of the car. it was the drivers side that got hit at pocono last month.
06-17-2004, 10:09 AM
Wow Gary...your ride is hot!!
06-17-2004, 10:45 AM
thanks-its all go no show. once again my real team motto-if it does not make it faster, handle better, stop quicker=it aint on the car. even the numbers are removable. this weekend instructing for svtoa at vir patriot. 7/9-10-11 at summit instructing for nasa and back at vir 7/30,31,8/1 for nasa. somewhere in july we have another enduro-forgot exactly when. then more to come-we are on track until the 3rd weekend in november. wanna race? i do. p.s. wd-40, the minimum ride height is 4 inches to the door sill per race rules. that's exactly where we are. it's about 2 1/2 inches lower than stock svtf. we actually brought the front up this past winter as it was too low.
