: Royal Purple Question!!!
TBIDDY83 05-07-2008, 03:41 PM Hello, everyone I have a 2003 focus svt. I was wanting to switch all my lubricants to royal purple but im not sure how to completely drain the transmission and flush it out. I also am not sure what kind of royal purple to buy to put im my tranny or how much to buy. I believe i need 5w30 for the engine but not sure what filter to buy, what is recommended. If anybody can help my i would appreciate it. Thanks
Svtzx555 05-07-2008, 03:49 PM From the factory they recommend 5w30, but I ran 15w50 in mine for the 20k miles I owned it. You can basically run whatever weight you prefer. For the trans, you just have to use the RP synchromesh stuff. In my opinion the only way to really flush it out would be to change it once, run it like that for a few days then drain and fill again.
TBIDDY83 05-07-2008, 03:58 PM Also where exactly is the drain plug for the transmission. Thanks
cebrowne 05-07-2008, 04:03 PM I believe your svt takes an FL-2005 oil filter, the same one for the zetec.
besthaticouldo 05-07-2008, 04:51 PM i just did my first fill up with RP...
im not too impressed. im going back to MC synthetic.
dirtbrown 05-07-2008, 05:21 PM i suggest mobil 1 mercon v it takes like 2.3 quarts....book says 2.1 but iono.
besthaticouldo 05-07-2008, 05:40 PM lol i just filled it til it started coming back out...it look like 2.3-2.5

You're kidding, right?
Good Lord, I seriously can't believe your engine actually made it that far running something that thick.
There's a reason the manual calls for 5W-30.
Don't just run "whatever weight you prefer".
TBIDDY83, I'd stick with what the rest of us are running, which is the factory recommended weight.
Filter as mentioned is a Motorcraft FL-2005,
or a lot of us use a WIX 51315. [;)]
jetrinka 05-07-2008, 07:26 PM *cough*Amsoil*cough* lol no but really. Stick with the factory weights. Using something as thick as 15w is just asking for it. And for filling the transmission just fill it till it starts coming dripping out of the hole while the car is on level ground.

Odd, my manual calls for a FL400S, which is also what was on my car when I purchased.
^^^2004 manuals do show the FL-2005.
The spec was updated for the later models, and would supercede the FL-400S on the early models.
The FL-2005 has a different anti-drainback valve that is better for the engine.
1turbofocus 05-08-2008, 08:14 PM My .02 if you going to drive your Focus to go to work , home , groceries , vacation then add the weight oil that comes in it. But if your running it hard , track , strip or street then you need more protection and all I run is 50 weight engine oil in every car I build and own. 50 WT oil wont hurt a thing and gives better protection for the performance guys
.02 #2 take the money that the RP , amsoil or any of th others out there and use it for something that will add life or performance to your ride

Yeah, theres a reason why the Ford manual says not to race the SVT also.
Yeppers. 15w50 baby. Meh, was probably overkill though. Looking at it now, I probably wouldn't run that heavy of an oil in that new of an engine, but you learn as you go. There is a reason it calls for a specific weight, but we all live in different regions...hot/cold and whatnot, so to each his own I guess.
My owners manual called for an FL400 also...I marked it out and wrote fl2005 for the next people who bought it though. [grinking]
