: $1245 to replace a clutch?? FTW

ok, my svt clutch is on its way out and i need to get a new one. i bought the car used last year and now its got 77000 miles and i believe its still on its original clutch so its common that it be ready to die. Since i have read that you need to get a new clutch, flywheel, pivot bearing, and pressure plate i figured it would be a nice hunk of change. But when i was quoted by Tires Plus $1245 for the parts and labor i was pretty outraged. Is this normal? And this is an OEM clutch replacement, nothing performance this or that.
So basically what is the cost you guys have paid for a new clutch? do you think i should try a Ford dealership? I think they overprice but maybe i should give them a shot.

I would really like to help you, but I have no idea. I believe that for that price you can get whole used svt tanny.

wow, you can get stage II clutch upgrade and have someone install for that price.
I wouldn't get OEM clutch again. Get Stage I or II 700-900 plus 300 or so for labor.
OEM clutches you can get for $300

first off all I think you should go somewhere other than tire pros to begin with....
sounds like a descent quote....but try somewhere that really knows transmissions

i got a spec stage two anf flywheel for i forgot how much about 900 total after shipping and all but i got it put on for $280 so i dont think a stock one should be that much since they are way cheaper

on average its $450 labor to do a clutch/flywheel on top of what ever the cost of the parts are.
05-06-2008, 12:19 PM
it only cost me $400
05-06-2008, 12:29 PM
wow over a grand for that? that's insane... i was quoted between 385-500.. and i called about 5 diff places...

The SVT OEM clutch and flywheel job was ~$600 in parts, ordered from Mike at a real good price. My local dealership quoted me about $1,900 for the job. Ford computers assume 8 hrs. labor for the job, so through them that is what you'll be charged.
That quote isnt outlandish, in fact for that price I might have just had it done for me.

thats less then what ford quoted me. 1350.
it sucks. its a pretty easy job. do it yourself man!

Just go aftermarket. As I always say, you get what you pay for.
For what its worth, I'm in the same situation.
I got a used 2003 SVT with 48k miles on it for under $9500.00 and well, I know why now!
After about 1 week the clutch wore completely out. The quote from two transmission shops was $1200.00 roughly.
The deal with the SVT is that its a 6-SPEED, therefore its 300-400 more than a 5-SPEED! Thats where the big $1200.00 comes from.
If you find a good transmission shop they will cover the new clutch and give you some options on upgrading to a SPEC-2 for a bucks more...
But you gotta get a mechanic that covers their work!

I bought a oem clutch from the ford dealer for around 350, and had clutch doctors put it in for about 350. on a 02 svt fofo

thats a great price for a clutch, all the dealers around south florida are out of clutches.
im still looking around for a better deal on this, $1200 is alot. And when i called ford they quoted me $1600, definitely not going to them

wow seeing all of you alls i got mine in cheap they charged me 280 to put mine in, not ford but a privately owned transmission place around my town. and done good work
05-09-2008, 08:52 AM
^^^ you see i never thought of finding a transmission shop around here but now im gonna look around, maybe i'll be able to get it installed cheaper and with the extra money buy a spec or clutchmasters setup instead of oem

thats about right... I bought a used 2003 euro svt and 3 months later i had change out the clutch. it was $1200 to do so. I got it done by a transmission shop. See the thing is that original clutches that are in the svt's got redesigned bc the oem ones were not built right. Thats why mostly everyone has had their clutches replaced.

ya, mine just went out...labor for clutch is $900 and the spec stage two clutch with flywheel is $700...labor for LSD install is $200 OBX lsd $250
05-12-2008, 11:55 PM
i didnt know obx made and lsd, how does it feel. usually i see lsd's sell for around $600.
also, it looks like im getting a spec clutch and flywheel combo, what is the difference between stage 2 & 3. im kinda stumped that stage 2 is more expensive.

Same price for me, also in South Florida. I have a regular ZTS sedan though. $500 parts + $700 labour. I've called to 3 different places, and I got more or less the same price.
The only thing I can guess with those lower quotes, is that the whole assembly isn't being replaced. Could that be the reason why it's so cheap?
