: Turbo MPG vs. Stock MPG

the title says it all. i've heard some off hand comments that a turbo gives better MPG than a stock engine. I'm talking of normal driving and not racing around using the turbo and i know that a less restrictive exhaust and intake go along with the turbo, but just wanted an estimate of what can be expected. thanks.

mmmmm, I'd say pretty good, then a whole lot less.

if the tune is good it should get equal/better mileage than stock.. you will be getting a more efficient burn of the fuel with the tune.

Adding a turbo wont get better mileage but if it's tuned right then your mileage will not suffer especially on highway driving. Usually the city driving will be slightly reduced but that really depends on how hard you drive.

do all turbo's eventually blow their engines? Cause I've heard people say they are great for a few thousand miles and then capput, that'd be unacceptable. Not trying to thread jack, just been on my mind and you guys seem to know what you're talking about.

^^^ no... depends how they are maintained and how well the tune is... there is no reason the engine should blow up just because of a turbo or supercharger for that matter... also how you drive would play a factor in that as well... but in that case... a stock engine can blow at any time too....

tuning is everything to the life of an engine + how hard you are on it, wether thats going for big numbers and/or hard your drive it [thumb]

i had a turbo on my previous 4cyl, and it had no issue, but you need to make sure it gets the coolant/oil it needs. very important.
oh, and got much less mpg with the turbo than without it. dunno why people are saying it would be better....

On the Focus Sport Turbo kit... I currenty have 79,000 miles on my 2006 focus ST. 61,000 miles of that tuboed. poor new car at 18k was in for a rude awaking
Still close to 80k.....
I get 290-337 miles per tank highway at around 80% of driving
05-01-2008, 02:05 PM
not being sarcastic, but how big is your tank? i get 360-385 miles on 11-12 gallons at fillup. 14 gallon tank.
so after all this, it seems that with a kit (and tune) that i might see 2 mpg better or at least stay even during normal commuting. then again we're talking 3000+ kit, 200+ exhaust, possible IM at 700+ getting me about 80% more power and possibly 2 MPG better. then again it would be on premium gas which would negate the increased MPG.
oh man...if only i won the lottery.
oh, and the clutch and lsd at 1000+.

i think my tank is 11.2 or something like that
05-01-2008, 09:19 PM
well today in fact went on my last tank 368 miles on 11.115 gal
33mpg... 90% highway.

how far did you go after the light came on? how much do you get after that comes on?
05-01-2008, 10:37 PM
i don't know the exact mileage he got but I do know that you can go a pretty good little distance even after that light comes on. I know cause i've done it riding in off the highway in the middle of nowhere to the gas station in town. I got lucky that night. lol. Oh, and my tank is 14 gallons and it cost me 41 dollars to fill up last night. :$
05-01-2008, 10:47 PM
41dollars sounds like you put about 10gallons in your tank... so you still had 3 to 4 gallons left in the tank.
05-01-2008, 11:30 PM
That's good that they went bigger with the gas tank, mine is only 13.2 gallons[mecry]
05-01-2008, 11:42 PM
no dude, i was on empty last night as well. The light was on. It wasn't as bad as the time I crash landed at the gas station but it was still pretty empty. I guess maybe it could have 2 or 3 gallons left when the light comes on though. I don't know how much it's set to go off at.

Not a good thing for new cars to run empty....
do they have turbos for a 2008 focus SE model yet? i just got one yesterday
05-02-2008, 10:11 AM
im pretty sure the focussport kit will work.
is there a credable website i can look at that?
i looked it up and it says it add 70% horsepower and torque so would my focus then be at 220-230 hp?

you can look over peoples dyno sheets on the website too. just figure out if you want stage two or one and what engine you have. some seem less than the quoted 70-75% and some get a little more. probably has to do with other mods like bs delete and clutch kits.
