: Piston Ring Orientation Help!!!
AcIdBuRn02ZTS 03-31-2008, 07:44 PM Hey alls... im in the middle of putting together my short block and ran into a problem...
the 1st comp ring is marked top side.... but the 2nd comp ring is not... only difference is its chamfered on one outer edge... so... does the chamfer point down towards the rod or should it point up? ive seen it done both ways, thats why i ask...
please help!!
thanks!

Weldman0730 03-31-2008, 07:54 PM i think on the inside of the box's lid it should say, when i rebuid truck engines it says there, it really matters though so make sure and find out before going on ahead with it, sorry i cant be more help
GreenEnvy 03-31-2008, 08:06 PM does the ring have any kind of mark such as a dot, wording etc? if so that always goes up
AcIdBuRn02ZTS 03-31-2008, 08:08 PM on the 1st ring it says top... on the second ring... it says nothing... and nothing in the packaging....

Weldman0730 03-31-2008, 09:43 PM I got them mixed up once and called a phone number on the box and found a knowledgable guy and he told me, maybe you can try that out
AcIdBuRn02ZTS 03-31-2008, 10:15 PM well... they are ford factory parts... so perhaps i'll call ford in the morning...
kinda sucks that i gotta wait though

Do you have an SVT or standard Zetec engine???
(You've posted in the SVT area)
I'm certain the pistons and rings are different between the two.

illinipo 04-01-2008, 12:16 PM if I had to guess you'd want the chamfer down, because that is when the combustion would cause the piston to scrape the cylinder wall...
but wait for Tom's advice obviously.
JRODSVT 04-01-2008, 12:35 PM just make sure not to line up the openings on the rings.

I think illinipo is correct, but there's no way I'd assemble anything without finding out for certain.
Did you call Ford?
You might even try SVT:

yeah it makes a big diffrence, dont assemble it by guessing, make sure you get them oriented the right way or your engine will have problems
good luck, let us know how it runs when you figure out
AcIdBuRn02ZTS 04-01-2008, 06:29 PM contacted focus power and massive speed, both of which said the notch area on the outside of the rings lip should go towards the bottom of the piston... so all is good now.
thanks for trying to help me out guys and telling me who to contact.

AcIdBuRn02ZTS 04-01-2008, 06:33 PM another quick question... when torquing the cap bolts, i know 1st stage is 26ft lb, then another 90 deg... how critical is the exact 90 degrees? will a few degrees difference hurt? reason i ask is i dont own an angle torque wrench and i cant find one locally....
with a rough 90... oil clearance is right at .0015
that about right?

JRODSVT 04-03-2008, 07:53 AM 1 i am sure if you are a few degrees off it will not matter to much but if you go to Autozone they usually have them for 15 bucks.
