The picture below is the reason you SHOULD put oil on the O-ring of your oil filter when changing your oil and filter. The Previous person whom changed this generator's oil did NOT.

I had probably some of the largest pliers anyone has seen crushing the filter just so i can get enough leverage to get it off.. and finally did! [whip]


i cleaned it and its sitting in my locker at work now as a trophy... as you can see the new filter is sitting to its side.

SO please, when changing your filter, fill the filter up alittle bit with oil and dab your finger in some clean oil and rub the O-ring all the way around.

I've always made doubly sure that I oil the filter gasket ever since I removed a filter and didn't realize that the gasket was stuck and stayed behind. I can tell you that having TWO gaskets under the oil filter does NOT seal twice as good...

Next time poke a screwdriver through the can and use it to screw it off. Works every time on those stuck filters!

When I started at the dealership I was doing oil changes and double O ringed the filter before. PITA once you start the car and have a large puddle on the floor.


Honhon I'll tell you something, each and every ford vehicle that has its first oil change has the filter looking like that. I have to use a 3 hooked claw on a long handle 3/8 ratchet to even begin to turn those damn things.

well its hard to punch a screw driver through it because the oil filter is inside the genset's case... thats why it made it so hard also to get the filter out...

heres a small diagram of one.

you'll see a part where it points to a small door on the bottom of the generator. you open that door, it swings down then you stick your hands about 9 to 10inches inside the generator and theres the oil filter, vertically mounted.

i ALWAYS oil my gasket before installation. and ive seen many times when ppl have not and removed the filter on down the road only to leave the old gasket stuck to the block and not know it. then realizing what happened after putting a new filter on, refilling the engine with oil, running the car, and having to start all back over trying to find out why the filter is leaking.

not to mention if you dont oil it, it can come apart when screwing it on via the excess friction.

thats what the oil filter ford put on my car looked like when i finally got it off at around 300 miles lol

I'll give you a reason to not let a moron at a bad shop work on your car and use an old O-ring.

This is after they had my car for 2 weeks trying to fix my alternator, the next day I see plumes of smoke behind me. Pull over immediately. Luckily my oil pressure was still up enough but it leaked out about 2 quarts or more. I called the shop furious that I had to have it towed back down there (didn't know what it was at the time). This was Saturday night. Monday morning comes around and I pull up right as they open the door and sat and told them if they found any terminal damage they would pay for it or hear my attorney. Reluctantly they pulled it in, having to pull out some 700whp Supra. Bout an hour later they bring up a used O and tell me it blew cause the guy they had doing the work was just a friend, not even a freakin employee there! I was so pissed I told them they had to change my oil for free and they gave me a K&N oil filter and Royal Purple for free. I left and never went back. They closed down about a month later from lack of business and numerous complaints. This was the shop that installed my blower and clutch and did a good job then...but went downhill with new management.

hmmm,,i never oil mine,and i only put them on hand tight...ive never had issues..

man you should rub a little oil on the gasket, and yeah dont over tighten it or you will have a hard time getting it off, hand tightening it is all it takes

i grease mine... but yeah no oil or grease big troubles

another thing is the lubricated o-ring won't dry out.
also, why some people tighten the hell out of oil filters is still a mistery to me

I'll bet the same guy who skips putting a thin film of oil on the oil filter is the same guy who doesn't change it when he can't get it off easily.

I don't get it, when I let someone else change my oil, they screw something up: breaking up the cowling over the cabin air filter, stripping the drain plug, wrong/incorrectly installed filter, under/over filling the crank case, leaving the oil cap off, losing the bolts that hold down the air filter enclosure, not topping up the fluids, slobbering oil all over the top of the motor, slobbering oil all over the flex pipe, and on and on.

I've heard that "everyone's favorite vendor" Wal Mart no longer removes the drain plug in an oil change, they suck out the old oil through the dipstick tube.

I'll bet the same guy who skips putting a thin film of oil on the oil filter is the same guy who doesn't change it when he can't get it off easily.

you kidding me, they have no way of knowing how full or empty the oil pan is if they do it that way, since the oil is going to get all over the dip stick tube unless they are using some sort of high vacuum pump and can get it all out of the dip stick tube...sounds retarded to me, the oil pan drain is thier for a reason, and some drain plugs have a little magnetic tip to remove any metal particles from the oil, which should be cleaned during every oil change...guess thats why i do all my maintenence[headbang] .

i dont have the space to do my own oil changes, i go to a valvoline, but i make sure to check out everything after i leave, but i do remeber when i was in auto shop in high school they said to put a little bit of oil on the o-ring when changing it

I've been doing that since I was 8 years old, helping my dad change the oil on his S-10. Its one of those things where I'd say "people don't oil the o-ring?!?"

I forgot last oil change... *GUILTY!!!*

i fill the oil filter up as well so it wouldnt have a dry shot once i start it..

same also goes for any seals in a hydraulic system
