: Best oil to use?

What does everyone suggest? I'm coming close to my first 5,000 miles and wanting to change the oil myself. I've heard Amsoil and Royal Purple mentioned as the best, also Motorcraft. I'm sticking with the factory recommended 5W-20, no matter what anyone says. Just what brand does everybody suggest I get?

I just changed my 10k mark from Motorcraft full synthetic to Mobil-1 full synthetic. I think the Mobil-1 is a bit nicer.

Asking what the best oil is like asking what is the best bottle water to drink. Its heavily influenced by opinion. [;)]

Whatever my Ford dealership puts in. Motorcraft 5W-20 I believe. 13,000 miles and running as smooth as day 1.

Motorcraft 5w-20 full synthetic, I work at ford and get it cheap PLUS actually felt a good difference between royal purple and the MC.

I changed at 7k with Valvoline Synth 5w30 (less ticking) and a FL-910 filter - no problems...

Thanks for your opinions, guys. I think I'll try either the Amsoil or the Motorcraft. What oil filter should I get, if I should get a new one at all? Does anybody know how much oil I need to buy to do the change?

Why don't you just check your manual and follow it. Don't you think the makers of the car know what's best.........Opinions mean nothing because that's all they are.... opinions. Check "bobistheoilguy.com". At least there, some contributors have some facts. You might try a Mobil 1 filter, though. Google oil filter tests to get some info.

Mobil 1 5W20, and either Motorcraft, Wix, or Purolator Pure One filters FTW

People keep mentioning Motorcraft 5w-20 full synthetic.

I've only seen the semi-synthetic at Wal-Mart. Are you guys buying the full synthetic elsewhere, or are you buying semi-synthetic and what I was was just a typo?

I think that you need to get from the dealership. I haven't seen it elsewhere.

Hm... Sounds like the Mobil 1 oil is pretty popular. How much of that do I need to buy to do an oil change? (I'm lazy to go check my manual.) I believe I'll buy a Motorcraft oil filter, or something similar...

New oil filter every 3,000 miles when I get the oil changed.

buy 5 qts, you'll use 4.5qts to fill it up. and the FL-910 is a good affordable filter

I bought the Motorcraft 5W-20 full synthetic at Wally World, 5 qts for $11. I decided to just take the Focus down the road to the shop and get the oil changed there. I'll just tell them to throw on a new oil filter; I'm not too picky about what brand. Shouldn't cost much since I'm supplying the oil.

Yeah I did that once and will never do it again. I got a 6 dollar discount for supplying my own oil and oil filter.

I got the oil change done at Wal-Mart, because the shop down the street was packed busy. The guy at Wal-Mart told me to return the oil I had bought, because I'd be paying double; they didn't discount for bringing your own oil. He did say he could just go get the same exact oil from inside the store, and a Motorcraft oil filter. So after I got the oil changed I went inside and returned the Motorcraft oil I had previously bought. In the end, I didn't end up out any money, and I got the oil I wanted. Happy.

Maybe not everyone wants to pay twice as much for Mobil 1...

Maybe not everyone wants to pay twice as much for Mobil 1...

Then maybe you should start a "Cheap-ass oil" thread?

Twice as much, half the oil changes, works out well for me. When i'm not running RP.
