: Huge Wing = 50WHP!!!!.....

So my friend drives a 91 Integra and is very convinced that adding a huge wing to it will improve downforce on the car and improve performance.... Keep in mind it is a front wheel drive car..... Has anyone else encountered people that seem to beleive this? I mean its comlete bogus and makes me want to [chair] him to death.

Haha, im sure he will be going no where near the speeds to feel any kind of benefit from such atrocity. Hate untasteful mods hehe. True to everyone his own but man some ppl are just WTF.... lol

Yup. I went to school with some. They are called ricers LOL. Tell him stickers add 10 hp per sticker

Yup. I had a guy at work with a 95 Mitsu Eclipse. It was purple with a fibrglass body kit. He needed a wing on the back so he could go 100 mph.

haha. I work as a cabinet-makers apprentice and for the longest time I drove a beater of a 94 Accord. I mean this thing was disgusting with body damage all over the place as well as rust. I was seriously thinking of fabricating a huge wooden spoiler out of plywood or something to put on the back of it as a joke and spray painting it camo. Too bad it got totalled going about 20 MPH.... The focus is a vast improvement. Oh and don't forget that the bigger your exhaust diameter, the faster your car will go. 5 inches is the best on those 1.5 civics. If you can fit your fist in it your good.

Agreed it does nothing for the car. If it's a huge it looks gay but if it's normal size it might look actually nice.

I'm not going into the "wings can be useful no matter the drivetrain, but generic Pepboys wings are for ricers" speech

yeah wings on fwd are basically for looks. i had one on my focus hatch only cause i liked the rally wing appearance and i took the car to shows on a weekly basis and had to set myself apart form the hatchback crowd.

Agreed it might look nice. My friend is talking about getting one of those that looks like it is 2 1/2 feet tall and ends up either in line with the top of the car or over it. Just looks retarded to me

Oh cmon EGZ. You can't tell me your making those numbers without a huge wing on the back! [joke]

They can be useful on a FWD car, but really only on high-speed, technical courses. Tell your friend that when he makes about 400 whp and wants to take on Nurburgring, then by all means, wing away.

Exactly.

I use to have a FR drag wing on my ZX5 HB.
The hole on the side was from the side wings.
As for adding more Hp I don't think so, just help the rear with downforce that's all man.

they are compensating for their short comings by attaching the wings. the bigger the spoiler, the more they are trying to make up for.

volkswagen had a commercial last year that pretty much said that people who buy big and ungodly flashy things are covering up things they arent happy with in their lives.

I use to have GroundDesign2000 back wing before I started see some cracks after I had to get holes and plate made for it to be bolted on the rear boot.
Yes I do agree it's over the top but, now I have a St170 rear boot and bumper on now.

wings can be tasteful..

01-28-2008, 11:11 AM
as stated before, from egz, they can be useful no matter what drivetrain.

actually, sinse a FWD car has most of its weight in the front, it would be a good idea for a wing to put some weight back on the ass:

http://www.marcymotorsport.com/MM_IMAGES/cars/MM_Focus_FC_7-23-06_2.jpg

and i highly doubt anyone would say against that, when walter rips up the track with his high output NA duratec.

Damn it honhon, I was about to say that, then sure enough I read through everything and here you are stating the obvious. The more force on the back during AutoX events would drastically help your cornering speeds. On a straight away...nnnnaaahhhhh not so much but sloping turns and changes in elevation, heck yeah.

MmmMmm yes but as a DD it is almost pointless

Here we go again... [confused]

1. Wings/Spoilers do produce downforce. However on cars in street trim, they are used more to affect stability than increased pressure over the rear wheels. For the average commuter (read here non-track application), there would be little noticed until higher speeds - angle of the wing determines higher speed, but you can bet it is north of 70 MPH.

2. Wings produce not only downforce, but drag. They limit speed and can be an impediment for long speed runs - Especially on Front Wheel Drive cars.

3. Any advantage gained by a wing in a corner situation on a street car falls well within the noise level of most drivers to be able to benefit.

Just one guy's experience from Grand Am and Rolex.

One small caveot regarding statement #1. There is an inverse relationship between downforce and surface area / angle of attack. A large wing with a sharper angle of attack will work much sooner than a smaller wing with a smaller angle of attack, but will also induce a lot more drag. Thus, you can't make a blanket statement that all wings will only operate at higher speeds; too many variables.

We are on the same page. [:)] That's why I made the comment about "higher speeds". It all depends on who's definition is used.

i know my spoiler on my car is strictly for use.

i've heard it was added after TTs on the autobahn were in accident due to not enough downforce. and since i'm AWD it does actaully help
