: Need License Plate Info For Old Ford
01-23-2008, 10:33 PM
I rifled through a box of old family photos and found this pic of a Ford Custom; I'm not sure what year. Apparently Ford has been running in my family for a long time! Would anyone be able to look up the license plate number to find out more about it? I don't know who owned it.

Its questionable if the California BMV/DMV (whatever its called out there) would keep records of license plate registrations going back that far. If they did you'd probably end up having to dig through reams and reams of paperwork, I seriously doubt the state would spend the money to digitize records more than 10-20 years old.

That's a 1949 Ford.
Ford runs in my family too. Here's a list of the cars my folks owned while I was growing up:
1959 Ford Country Sedan wagon
1961 Falcon Fordor wagon
1965 Country Sedan wagon
1966 Country Sedan wagon
1968 Country Squire wagon
1962 Galaxie 500 4 door sedan
1972 Country Squire wagon
1973 Country Squire wagon
1972 Mercury Marquis
1975 LTD 4 door sedan
1976 Mercury Grand Marquis
The only non-Ford we had when I was growing up was a 1955 Buick Century 4 door sedan.
I have only ever owned Ford products myself:
1962 Mercury Monterey 2 door sedan
1963 Ford Thunderbird
1993 Ford Escort GT
2007 Ford Focus ZX3 SE

How do you tell the difference between '49, '50 and '51 Customs?

The turn signal/parking lights:
The whole grille was changed in 1951:
The 1950 also had push button door handle. On the 1949, you pulled the door handle to open the door.

thats freakin awesome, ford really doesnt run in my family unfortunally, my mom both grandfathers and one of my grandmothers worked for GM for many many years, our family (dad, mom, sister, and myself) are the only ford owners on both sides of the family

My folks still own Fords. Here is a list of the cars they have had since I've been on my own:
1981 Mercury Colony Park station wagon
1973 Ford LTD 4 door sedan - winter beater
1978 Mercury Marquis Brougham - became the winter beater when they bought the Aerostar
1990 Ford Aerostar XL E4WD
1997 Ford Aerostar XLT E4WD
2003 Ford Windstar SEL - current vehicle
My Mom always insisted on station wagons. I never heard my Dad complain, but the 1966, '68, '72, and '73 wagons we had, all had the most powerful engine available in them.
