: ZX3 totaled, get another ZX3 or SVT?

Sad to say someone ran a red light and t-boned me pretty hard. I'm ok, unfortunately my ZX3 is totaled and I got $8800 for it. The ZX3 2.3l was great and had nice power and handling for a commuter. I've been searching around and it seems that the svt focus is as quick or maybe a tick quicker than a 2.3l zx3. Is this true? I'd be willing to fork out some extra cash for a noticeably quicker car but if they are the about the same I think I might just get another zx3. What would you guys do, keeping in mind that whatever car I get will remain bone stock.

..sticking with something that has the 2.3
I'm in California also. I don't have any experience with the SVT, but we have 2 Foci with the 2.3 PZEV - my '03 ZTW wagon (auto), and my daughter's '04 ZX3 (stick). I've driven Foci with the standard 2.0 Zetec, and there is NO comparision to that motor at all. I don't recall if your post/sig indicated whether you had a manual or automatic, so keep in mind that for commuting with the SVT, you'll be doing a lot of rowing of the gears (6-speed).
Throwing another wrench in the works, as long as you're looking, you may as well check out a Mazda3 - the same 2.3 motor is available - and it has a bit more power.

The SVT is going to have a bit more kick to it over the Pzev. I don't mind shifting gears. I wouldn't have it any other way. The seats in the SVT are far more comfortable then those in the regular ZX3 and if you find an EAP car it's even another step up in comfort. The down side is that it requires 91 octane or better.

i think the SVT is a better all around car (if you are keeping it bone stock), nicer interior, better suspension, and nicer looking!

go svt if you dont plan on modding it, otherwise the 2.3 is an amazing engine that does great with bolt ons, and if your lookin for a quicker car the 2.3 will come out ontop, but the svt is much nicer overall and a much rarer car, but hard to say 5 speed 2.3l hatch are also rare
Stock for stock, go for the SVT. The 2.3l really shines when modded, but since the car will remain stock, means the SVT will be the better buy, by far.

look for an SVT, unless you don't want to deal with 91 octane gas.
SVT = 170 HP
2.3 ZX3 = 150 something, right?

yeah svt unless you want to mod. cause my st with exhaust and intake keeps up with a svt thats stock around here and the 2 times ive messed around with him ive won so there competitive

SVT with a reflash. A reflash will do wonders with added low end power, overall driveability and also, a few MPG more.

There is not a fathomable reason to choose an SVT over anything equipped w/ a Duratec.
This is coming from someone who has owned 6 Zetec Foci, 1 of which was an SVT.

Why wouldn't he choose an SVT over a Duratec?

Also depends if he wants warranty since hes stayin stock of he gets a 07 2.3 he could have a good warranty other than buying something used that someone abused lol but its all what he wants.. i wanted a used svt but than though it over and said someone else beat thte hell out of it so i got a new st

From someone who has a 2.3 dura and has driven an SVT for about month, if you going to drive it everyday and keep it stock then I would go for a 2.3. If your worried about comfort I would suggest an 05 ST... very comfortable car and the power of a 2.3. My ST stock was just as fast as an SVT however I would guess the SVT would be faster top end wise.
I guess in really simple terms, the 2.3 seems to be "peppier" from the get go as in better low end.

ive been hoping somebody would toatal mine out so i could get an svt (i dont wanna get hurt though)lol

Get an 05 ST if your looking to get used witha good price range.

2.3 with just a few mods should handle better, have just as much power, not look ricey, lower insurance rates. BTW you can get extended warranties through independent companies, there are two or three big ones that are very reliable and reasonably priced. About $1k for my 05 ZX3 w/45k miles to get a 100k mile bumper-to-bumper extended warranty.

I think I'm going with another 2.3 ZX3. There just aren't any ZX3 SVT foci available locally. I found a real clean 2.3 ZX3 with a CAI already installed, it's noticeably quicker than my old ZX3. I work in San Francisco and the combination of steep streets and about a million potholes just beats the crap out of cars, I'd hate to do that to an SVT.

If my car were to be totaled right know. I would most definately be looking at the Mazda3. Not to say I don't like my car but it has the 2.3 with a hatch. And it look just killer!

I changed my mind and got an '03 SVT. The ZX3 I looked at had a bunch of water under the carpeting that I found upon closer inspection. I bought a black SVT with 40K on it, HID lights, and the factory subwoofer option. I'll post some pics later. The butt-o-meter tells me that this car is just a bit quicker than my old ZX3 off the line but the ZX3 falls flat around 5500rpm whereas the SVT pulls nicely to the redline.
