We can start the planning stages in this thread....
As long as....
You spell "August" correctly in the title.[:D]
Know how to make it a "sticky"?

BTW, Sturgis Rally is August 9th-15th. Sturgis Rally.com (http://www.sturgis-rally.com/)

Do you have a schedule for the Rapid City AutoX events, RS-Wagon?
The only one I know of, is the July 25th event that you mentioned.

Frankly, I thought that an AutoX was just a "shot in the dark".
Didn't know there'd be that much interest.
I could give or take doing that on a vacation though, as an AutoX will pretty much take up a whole day.

Weekend of Aug 14-15 would be OK, except for the aforementioned Sturgis event.
There may be some "photo op" competition with that many bikes on the road.
But, then again, might be cool with all the bikes around.[:D]
Don't forget, might be tough to find a motel around the date too.
Anyone got a line on what motels are available in Rapid City?

As far as anyone wanting to meet up in Yellowstone, we go there a LOT.
It's less than 4 hours from our place, and that's with getting the dogs some exercise on the way.
I'll just put up a post when we're heading down again, if anyone want's to meet there.

there is an auto X aug 15 . Aug 29 So it should be after the Rally. The club always avoids the rally dates.

Living in South Dakota and having to deal with the rally for the last 7 years I can tell you that you do NOT want to do this from the week before the rally all the way through 3 or 4 days after the rally. Traffic is so obnoxious, no hotel rooms what so ever, and way too many cops. The rally is a great time, but after spending a day up there it gets boring. Anything else to do around here will be swamped with tourist bikers, and way to many bikes on the roads to get anywhere. As far as places to stay, I can put up some people at my house, but if you want a hotel here during the rally you are probably out of luck. They fill up a year in advance most of the time. A house can be rented, but they are several thousand dollars with a deposit of several thousand. If you think you will just bring a tent and camp...good luck. Campgrounds are already booked and new campgrounds open up in farmers fields and fill up as soon as they open. Some people let you camp in their yards but they are gonna charge quite a bit for that too. I am definitely not trying to prevent this from happening during the rally, but I think everybody will be a lot happier if it is another date. Anytime that is not August 1st thru the 18th would be best. If you insist on hitting up the rally then I would suggest Getting this thing started on August 14th, that is the last two days of the rally with the biggest events. Many of the bikers have left town or will be heading out soon after. I would say about half of them get here a week early and then leave on the Friday before it ends(August 13th) Like I said before though, I can put up quite a few people at my house and have room for many many tents in my yard and parking for probably 20 or more. To me the date doesnt matter because I am gonna be here no matter what.

i would go with the not during the sturgis rally vote.

save some space in your yard for me dingaling, lol. (now i just have to find my tent. lol)

on second thought, maybe i should reserve a piece of your floor. lol

if we are taking votes, i would vote for the 22nd-23rd.

Hey, August is still spelled wrong.[:(]
Um, anyway, looks like the weekend of August 21st and 22nd is the best bet for the most folks.
We'd probably take the 20th and 23rd off for the "commute" from our part of the country.

So far I see 12 people that have shown interest:
awebb – Des Moines, IA
CompOrangeSVT – MN
crazy_urn – Thornton, CO
dingaling – Rapid City, SD
Focus_ryter – Colorado Springs, CO
L.E.D.zx3 – CO
RS-wagon – Laramie, WY
Shady R – Sioux Falls, SD
smoknzx3 – Minot, ND
sodakproud – Sioux Falls, SD
stxen12 – OH
WD40 – Helena, MT

Please confirm with a yes or no if you can make the date of 8/21-8/22 at Mt Rushmore.

A couple questions to think about.
Do we want a pot-luck type dinner at a park somewhere?
Do we all want to stay in Rapid City at the same place?
What side-trips would be of interest? Deadwood? Badlands? Crazy Horse Monument?
Are there any kids coming? Do we want to have some sort of fun activity planned for them?

Let me know what you think.
Thanks.

I can make Aug 21-22.
Food doesn't matter. Canyon lake park would be a good place to have it. We could have a show and shine at the same time.
Lodging doesn't matter.
ditto for side trips. maybe a tour of the area. start at Rushmore then head up iron mtn road for pics, then down through Custer state park. Throught Custer to/past Crazy Horse. on up to Deadwood.
Not sure of the kids one at least will be coming, while another will be dropped at his freinds house in Rapid. my 16 year old depends on his plans.

since we have settled on a Date( I assume) I will post on the Jet.

Thanks for the input.
It's nice to have folks that are familiar with the area.

I will be there, as long as finances dont pose a prob. (i am getting married in oct, so it might be a prob) i will have a more concrete answer closer to the date, but for now, count me in.

pot luck sounds good, but it would be hard for me. its a seven hour drive, dont want the stuff to spill all over the car... if you dont mind the special from the local grociery store, i will help out with a pot luck.

as another thought on this, would anyone be interested if meeting points were set up on i-90 going from souix falls to rapid? was kinda thinking that we could set times for 3-4 different points to pick up others and travel in a group.say sf, mitchell, murdo, and wall drug. or are most going to be coming through sf. know i would have to meet up in mitchell since it's about a strait shot south to the interstate.

Well, my wife and I are definitely going to be there.
It's still a ways out, so I haven't been posting in this thread lately.

Anyway, we've already set aside the weekend of August 21st and 22nd.

Our itinerary:
1) Friday - The road trip to Rapid City:
Leave Helena on Friday the 20th at 7:00am.
Spend a few hours at the Custer Battlefield.
Arrive in Rapid City somewhere around 7:00.
We'd pretty much stick to I-90 in order to make RC in 1 day.

2) Saturday - The Mt Rushmore G2G:
We've got a whole day to "fOCUS" on the G2G. [:D]
I'd appreciate some input from you "locals".
Like:
Pot luck/picnic area, G2G and pic area, when's the best time to see MtR,
which direction should we travel the Iron MT Rd.,
I'll bet we could fit in a Badlands expedition, etc, etc.

3) Sunday - The trip from Rapid City to Billings:
Leave Sunday morning around 9:00am.
Planning on spending a few hours each in Deadwood and then Devil's tower.
Should arrive in Billings around 9:00pm, and stay overnight.

4) Monday - From Billings to home.
We'll take the Beartooth highway down through Deer Lodge, and then the northern end of Yellowstone.
Spend a few hours in the park, and should be home by 6:00pm.

If anyone wants to join us anywhere along the way, just give me a shout!

This is going to be a blast!
I can't wait to meet you folks and see your Foci.
Let alone, be able to put some faces with the names on the site.
Cool!

Well the best place to have a picnic and Show & Shine would be Canyon Lake park.( it starts at the corner of Jackson Blvd and Canyon Lake Drive) It is a drive through type that has a few parking/picnic areas. But there are others. Baken Park, old storybook island. From there we could caravan to rushmore then up Iron mtn road( best from the rushmore side) We could follow Iron mtn through Custer state park. Then Follow hwy 287 out of Custer past crazy horse. And eather take Sheriden Lake rd or Rim rock Hwy ( both fun roads[:)~] [driving] ) back to Rapid.
Then Sat Night hit the cruising spot 8th street( Mt. Ruchmore road) There might even be a cruise nite happening, ya never know.

how many miles would that be.
That just happens to be our route home.
Billings would be a good starting point for the Beartooth Highway and Yellowstone on Monday.
We're just over 3 hours out of Yellowstone, so we'd be back home that evening.

I don't have a print-out of the mileages with me, so I'm not sure how far Billings is from Rapid City.
IIRC, it's about 6 hours.

That's a HUGE order of business to set one up.[:(]
#1. Need a site.
#2. Need someone to set it up and run it.
#2a. That would have to be a club that already has timing equipment and cones.
#3. There's also liabilty insurance to think about.
The only people that would have something like that available would be an existing club.

Not trying to burst the proverbial AutoCross bubble, but unless it's already an established date,
I don't think we'd have much chance getting one set up.

RS-wagon is the person familiar with the AutoCross events in that area.

Hey Shady... what's the very first thing we're doning on Sat? Where and when? I think we need to start getting the finer details worked out. Such as a full schedule of events out in the hills, approximate times to meet up at the appointed stops along the way and who's gonna be there... stuff like that. Too bad this forum doesn't have a chat room. We could schedual a time for us all to be in there and set up details that way. I suppose someone could do some research and find a chatroom for us to meet in. Then we'd just have to register at the chat site and go from there. Any volunteers to do that?

Looks like I applied foot to ass & Celldwellers in. Suppose we could do that. So what changed your mind? First thing on Sat. Wake up, shower, & food kidding. I don't know. Since we are so much closer to the date we should get some more things figured out.

Now that this is getting closer, I need a list of people who are going to want to crash at my place. I have three couches, two futons, an air mattress or two, and I should have an extra two or three beds by then. I also have plenty of off street parking resrved for the Foci. If anybody wants to camp out in my yard just bring a tent. All i have to say is that I get the first warm shower each day and when the hot water runs out then you will have to wait. I have a gas grill and will buy the first keg if I get a few takers on this idea. I also have a nice sized garage and a few tools if we need them. We definitely need to take a trip to Deadwood while everybody is here, and win some money.

Hey, just a thought. I'm guessing we'll all be doing this thing year after year right? We should get promotional T-shirts for it. Get them printed up and start wearing them... I don't know... 8 months prior to the event to get the word out. That way you don't have to know a Focus driver to tell them about it. They can just read your shirt and if they want, come to you and ask about it. Hmmm... that reminds me Sodak Proud has a web server and if memory serves me right, he's not really using it. We could set up a site "www.sodakproud.com/focus" or something to post pics from the g2g and put up a schedual of events and such. Put the address on the T-shirt along with the date... good idea? Sodak Proud, myself, and Shady R would probably take care of the website. Anyone work at a screenprint shop? BTW what's the general schedual of this g2g anyway? date, time, event... come on Shady, dingaling, RS-Wagon, WD40 this is your brainchild. Sorry if I missed anyone.

So what do you guys want to do first? Meet in Rapid and fly by the seat of the shorts the next couple days or organize it to be some what on a schedule. First thing I want to do is get a room and crash. I'll be leaving friday night to avoid the heat and the sun and the traffic. Could I get a couple responce of a meeting point in Rapid and a time. Ex. A Restrount at 10:00a.m. on Sat the 21rst. then Rushmore at 1:00p.m. and so on. Or I will make a schedule and you guys can listen to dulcemer music in concert in the park and body paint on the streets.

Speaking of donations I was just wondering what the trip would cost. I came up with for me.

$100 for gas.
$150 for hotel
$100 for food
$100 for safe keeping
Total $450 being on the high side.
I probably could get away with $200 on the low side.

What kind of place is the Foothills Inn?
65 units, and some with whirlpools.
They've also got a 130' water slide. [:D]
1625 North LaCrosse Street.
Their listing shows $29-$99 for 8/16-3/31.
2 diamond rating.
I've got the AAA travel book right here with me now, if anyone needs more information.
Comfort Inn and Days Inn are always places we'll stay as well.

I gave up on Super8 a while ago.
Long story, but suffice it to say I will never stay at another one.

Shady R
07-22-2004, 02:15 PM
OK, If you gave up on super 8 then I'll bale on it to. Nothing worse than bad publicity you know.

The foothills inn sounds like a lot of fun but $99.00 seems a bit steep for a motel in a small city like rapid.

I'm familiar with days inn and comfort inn but which one has the better bar closest to it. Oh no, wait, I ment family resteraunt. WD40 whats the brochure say about these two Inns. Or atleast give me a really good reason to stay at the Foothills Inn, no really convince me I just need an excuse kinda like bowling. Something to tell the women you know.Ex.Safer, cleaner, more fun, and so on.

Nuts. I don't have the cell with me, and I can't call long distance from work.
Here's (http://www.blackhills-info.com/foothills/) the Foothills Inn website.
It does show a Perkins 24 hour Restaurant as being next door,
but who knows if they serve "our" kind of beverages.[;)]
I'm assuming that $99 price is for one of the rooms with a whirlpool.
Probably more like $69-$79 for a regular room.

Comfort Inn (http://www.comfortinn.com/ires/hotel/sd004)
AAA rate: $107.99 (woe, now that's getting up there)
Indoor pool and hot-tub.

Days Inn (http://www.daysinn.com/DaysInn/control/Booking/property_info?propertyId=05704&brandInfo=DI)
AAA rate: $107.10 (woe, another high price)
Pool.
Casino/Lounge.

Hmmmm.
Here's an interesting prospect.
Quality Inn (http://www7.choicehotels.com/ires/en-us/html/HotelInfo?sid=UizT.2j6vclIeW.7&hotel=SD037&sarea=19399&sname=Rapid+City&sstate=SD&scountry=US&sradius=40.22&slat=44.081600189208984&slon=-103.2301025390625&schain=CI&exp=&scity=Rapid+City&sort=)
AAA rate: $80.99
Pool/Hot-Tub
Casino/Lounge.
Also, my wife says they have a great FREE full breakfast.

BTW,
I think we're adding another day to our trip, so we can see a few more things down there.
That's a whole 2 full days to "fOCI" around now![:D]

then press on to Rapid City.
Arrival time should be around 7:00pm on Friday night.

WD40
07-22-2004, 03:06 PM
And,
Our route back.
Leaving Sunday (or better yet, Monday) morning with stops in Deadwood, Devil's Tower, whatever else,
then spending the night in Billings.
Next morning we'll head off down the Beartooth highway into northern Yellowstone, then trek back to Helena.
Whew, there's a road trip for ya!
Anyone heading to Colorado want to take a detour at all?
I know you'd probably be heading past Devil's Tower, wouldn't you?

WD40, Groupe Rate is what I'm after. Kinda why I was wanting to know where you where staying.

To bad you don't live closer to me. kcZTS03 Wasn't able to make it recently for me to do the tint on his car. And now I have tint cut to fit his car and no car. The sun strip and side windows would work on your car. I would of need to cut the far back side windows for you though. I already have a cut back window to. All in 20%.

WD40
07-22-2004, 05:00 PM
Dang, didn't know you did tinting.
I'm just going for the back 2 windows and the hatch at this point in time.
Nothing for the front.
I drove my bro-in-laws rig that has tinting all around, (sans the windshield), and it was downright scary.
I pulled right out in front of someone cause I couldn't see them at night.
Headlights or not, they were invisible to me till I rolled the window down.

You did a nice job on those cars by the way. I like!

Work is busier than heck right now, but I'll try and see what some places would do for group rates.
Course, the next question is how many folks are really coming.
I'll shoot for 10 rooms and see what happens.

I checked some of the places that goinloco1 listed in an earlier post, but 1/2 of them had higher rates than he showed.

Another choice:
Red Roof Inn (http://www.redroof.com/reservations/inn_details.asp?innNumber=640) is at $71.99 not the $54 that goinloco1 had listed.
Hmmmm.

Here's the link he posted in case you don't want to back-track through the thread.

I could turn on the radio witch is easy enough but the ability to change stations or change cd's by remote is what I like to do). Okay here we go... I'll need some help from dingaling, but it's about friggin time to get a schedule going.

Saturday

- 11:30 or so: Meet up in a city park (ask dingaling) and picnic, take pics, kick each others tires, etc...

- Whenever we're done: Head out of town and go to Mt. Rushmore for more pics, Iron Mountain Road, any other ideas while were out that way?

- Next: Something... autocross? depending on what time it is... around 9:30 or whenever the sun goes down, get everyone together for a nice big Focus convoy around Rapid.

- Last: Hit the bars and whatnot... I don't know. I'm out of ideas for Saturday.

Sunday

- Noonish... depending on how late Satruday goes: Meet up at a mall or something?

- Next: Dingaling mentioned it and i'm up for it. $14 day pass to the water park.

-After that: I don't know... someone help out here... Dingaling? Hello?

if you book online, use the internet users discount, got a room w/ 2 queen beds and internet for $80.99 a night. military was 99.00 a night. so it sounds like the room will be big enough for a little bench racing and what have you. [confused] [drinking]

one other thought on something to do, maybe sunday do a cruise through spearfish canyon? haven't been through there in awhile.[}:)]

Well now apparently after 60min you can no longer midifie your post. So incase all where wondering why this hasn't updated recently this is why. Hey moderaters why bother putting the damn edit bar on the freaken lower right side if we can't use it as we like.? Why don't they just take the damn (profile, pm, www, search, buddy, edit, quote) bar off to. apparently it's just there for looks any ways. I'm pissed couse it's so close to the date and for any who could or would last minute like to join us they haft to read like 5 different post to find out the info they would need. Instead of a compiled list on one page.
