: Automatic to 5-speed?
Jgrove998 09-13-2007, 03:04 PM Hey everyone! I have a '05 ZX4 SE with the automatic transmission (and I hate it). Got the car from a elder member of the family that didnt need a 5 speed but anyway.....
I think about having a 5 speed all the time so i thought id ask what it would take swap the auto trans for a manual. Where would be the best place to get the parts and how would you go about switching them around? or is it not even worth the trouble to try and switch over to a 5 speed?
Thanks everyone. [ffrocks]
Dcl2049 09-13-2007, 03:26 PM It's a little bit difficult. I know Mike (b16sir1991) on here has apparently done it and is experienced with the swap. But it's a fairly intensive process that involves swapping out the main wire harness and ecu. I think the transmissions are still the same, but the bell housing is different and will not bolt up to the Duratec engines if you come across a Zetec one.
Send him a PM if you want to know the details but it's a little expensive and takes a little while. I'm actually not sure if anyone has done it on a 05-up Focus.
b16sir1991 09-13-2007, 03:47 PM I can do the swap, it is slightly labor intensive but can be done in a weekend, but if i were to do it, i would rather have it for two weekends and the week in between. I can supply all the parts new except the trans and that way you would at least have a 12/12 warranty on the parts.
Jgrove998 09-13-2007, 04:46 PM I figured it might be a pretty intense project. Where would be the best place to get a 5 speed trans, new or used? salvage yard? or offline somewhere?

checked out that website and found alot of nice transmissions. This project seems more realistic then i thought. time to save, save, save, save so i can get this done!!!!!!
RickNC 09-14-2007, 11:48 AM Probably be cheaper to sell the car and get one with a manual.
NintendoSkater 09-15-2007, 12:17 PM I know a 16 year old that changed his automatic Volvo to a 5 speed in a weekend, I say go for it if your dedicated. Personally I'd just sell it and get a manual Focus or just keep mine like it is.
Muhaha2 09-15-2007, 07:04 PM Haha look at the above post ^^^^ (manual) 2002 zx5 I hate you =(
Blurvfocus 09-15-2007, 08:09 PM By the time you get done horsing around with that, you'll be half nuts! You're far better off to go find the car you really want and trade this one in on it. And you can get THAT done in a single weekend.
Muhaha2 09-15-2007, 10:59 PM But but but.... what of the sentimental value...... o well... 4dr svt anyone?.... [grinking]
Jgrove998 09-16-2007, 05:16 PM yea, it probably wouldnt be worth it in the end. Ill probably just keep it for the gas mileage and save for something i really want. I do like my focus though [headbang]
pitstop 09-16-2007, 08:26 PM I was thinking of doing just the opposite. Too bad you don't live in Washington state we could trade.
Klondike 10-03-2007, 02:25 AM ^damn thats the 1st ive ever heard someone wanting to go down to an auto!

My friend is going to help me do mine, I helped him switch his his Civic from auto to manual, and he got it done in 5-7 hours of just straight pure work, he's only 19 and was working out of his family garage, ordered all the parts he needed, when they all arrived, he did it in that 5-7 hours.
I'm gonna have him help me switch my car from auto to 5-speed. So if you really wanted to you could probably do it.
