Yes i love my spi but it is so hard to find parts (if you know of a site for parts let me know) and Im tring to deside if I want to swap my spi for a zetec or a svt. And would this work would i have to buy new drivetrain and or a transmition. Sorry spi lovers but you know the pain of seeing all the zetec parts and being turned down all over.

Eh it's not impossible if you know what you're up against. The SPI utilizes the iB5 transaxle while the Zetec uses the MTX (I am assuming you drive a 5 speed). So yes, you WILL need a new tranny. I am not 100% sure of the drivetrain, but I would guess the same. I am planning on doing a swap for a Zetec with my cousin, and he's an ASE certified master mechanic so if he's confident we can pull if off, that's good enough for me.

I will say that it won't be easy, or cheap. There's a lot of homework you need to do.

yes u can do it, and yes u have to change the drivetrain, whatever you swap the car to(engine) you must mate it with the respective tranny. so if svt get a 6 speed getrag, and if a zetec get the mtx. if i were you, hold on to the car, trade it in and get a new car(svt).

In general, I would agree with 2fast4u. The only reason I'm doing my swap is because he gets parts dirt cheap and by the time we're done, it will end up costing less than the purchase price of the engine and tranny alone.

The SVT swap is NOT worth it at all IMO. I have heard that the Getrag is not as reliable as the mtx, and for the amount of money and stress you could be facing, you may just want to save for an SVT.

When I start my Zetec swap I'll be posting pics/progress. Right now I'm in the process of fixing minor issues like brakes need work, and a new clutch wouldnt hurt.

Well, if they can convert it to a V-8, I see no reason why they can't do a V-6, but then you have another car with a Focus chasis. I mean hey, with the right know-how you can do whatevever the hell you want! My cousin just finished hooking up some guy's '86 Chevy pickup with a Corvette engine! That thing sounds BADD A$$!

check out the new focus fanatic magazine. there is a sedan in there with a v-8 from a mustang cobra. if that isnt enough for you, he also added twin turbo. that thing pushes over 700 hp. that is the type of engine swap i want to do. forget the zetec. go with a real engine.

If I was out to make a name for myself in the sport-compact drag scene, maybe. But for me I want a better starting engine than the 110hp SPI for modding, and the Zetec provides the extra power while still having mods available. 700hp is awesome but not practical for street use. With a V8 conversion you would be wise to get a fuel cell (else you will see more of the gas station clerk than your family) and the most common place they put them is the trunk. I would not reccomend that for daily driving, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

If you want to check one out, visit focusperformance.com. They have a link for their V8 conversion. You'll see what I mean.

Boy if I only had $20,000 to swap my squirrel for a pure bred V-8. Reality sucks.
