: how do i make a turbo kit?
Stgfxfocus 08-03-2007, 03:27 AM i'm trying to gather as much information as i can about turbos, especially how to hook em up. I'm trying to brainstorm a STS similar setup, but i'm thinking about cutting the muffler out and placing it there. STS site http://www.ststurbo.com/.
I'd appreciate any comment and info.
Thats is a really broad question. I'd just suggest starting to read up and look at installation pics, diagrams etc.

As far as the STS kits, it is possible to make one, but will be a difficult process, especially with the Focus.

But A few thing i don't understand/know, how does the oil get to the turbo? how/where does the boost guage get hooked up? how/where does the boost controller get hooked up....If anyone has a link to diagrams, or *detailed* pics of turbo installation, i'd appreciate if ya throw me the link. DareDevil03 08-03-2007, 03:23 PM With the remote mounting for the STS system, you have to find a way to support the turbo and route the charge piping from the rear of the car to the front to either the intercooler or the intake manifold.
As far ar oil, you need to tap into the block (there are a few places that you just take a bolt out and put in a fitting for an oil line) and feed it to the turbo and then drains to the oil pan via another line from the turbo to a fitting that has been welded on to the oil pan, or a new oil pan that has already came with one.
The boost gauge usually get tapped into the chargepipe that goes to the throttle body. You would need to tap the pipe with the thread pattern of the fitting that came with the gauge and then should screw right into that.
Impaled 08-03-2007, 03:33 PM Why would you go with a setup like that on a focus? It'll take you all day to get into boost!
The bigger V8's do it cause they have no room and they're pushing enough power N/A to where turbo lag doesn't make too much of a difference.

Oil Drain: Tap the block or tap the pan.
Boost Gauge: Hook it up to a vacuum line off the intake manifold.
Boost Controller: Hooked up inline on the vacuum line to the wastegate actuator.
As stated the STS setup would be slightly difficult to rig up on a focus. You really wouldn't need an intercooler though, since the air would get cooled in the pipe on the way back to the intake mani. You'd still have to worry about running oil lines all the way back there which would suck.
I'll dig through my pictures of my turbo install and see if I have some good ones to show you.[thumb]
fusi0n 08-03-2007, 09:22 PM You're way better off with a turbo somewhere in the engine compartment.
1. Don't have to worry about driving through big puddles.
2. Don't have to worry about ground clearance if the car is lowered.
3. Don't need access to a lift for proper installation/maintenence.
4. People will be able to see it when you open your hood.
5. Less cost for piping / etc.
6. Less hassle running piping / etc.

coletrain 08-05-2007, 11:46 AM If you want to know every thing and any thing about turbo chargers go to Books-a-million (or a book store of some sort) and look for "Turbochargers" by Hugh Maclnnes. It has every thing you could possibly want to find out about turbos. It gets pretty technical but there is a lot of info in there to help you out.
