i got to thinking the other day... a friend of mine has a 03 zx3 zetec and he was talkin about upgrading to a getrag from a svt. (this is where the thinking came in) so i was wondering what if i swapped him my getrag for his 5 speed? (im just curious and this is no more than a thought so dont fly off the handle on me) the 5 speeds first gear is so much better, the getrags is so tall my car falls on its face leaving from dead stop. its horrible. plus the 5 speed has an overdrive whereas my getrag does not. i was thinking my stv would probobly run better E.T.'s and get better gas mileage. also anyone know the final drives of each gear in both transmissions? especially the final gears in both trans? id like to know if the 5 speed actually would get better mileage with the OD. so whats everyones thoughts/opinions on something like this? keep in mind i dont auto-x or track race. im mainly into drag racing. theres no road courses near here.

I know its possible going from MTX-75 to Getrag, I'm not sure if anyone's ever done it in the opposite direction. I would think its possible, if the regular Zetec ECU can cope with the change I can't see any reason why the SVT ECU couldn't. You'll need to swap transmission wiring harnesses or at least the plug ends, I believe the plugs are a different shape between the two.

my sixth in my svt and my fifth in my zx3 are pretty close rpm at about 70ish...so as far as mileage i dont know if that would be true.

well i know that 6th gear in the getrad isnt an OD gear and the 5th in the 5 speed is. im also pretty sure that a normal zx3 has different differential gears than the svt. this is probobly why both your cars have about the same rpm at the same speed.

It would be good if anybody can confim the interchangability of these 2 trannnys. I belive the 5 speed actually is rated for more power and torque than the six speed. It might be a cheaper and better solution if somone (espicially with a boosted SVT with loads of power )needed to replace the Gertag. And ,as you stated ,you might get a lower 1/4 time.

Well, like I said its possible to go from 5 to 6 speed so I would think its possible to go the other way...I just don't think its ever been done, or if it has nobody has documented it.

do you think it would run a quicker 1/4?

Technically it should, the MTX-75 is known to be better in the quarter, although I'd rather have the 6-speed for auto-x and road course (never been much of a fan in going fast in a straight line...I can do it for free on highway onramps.) The other benefit is (if you're so inclined) a LSD is much cheaper for the MTX-75.
Here's Jeremy's (from Focus Salvage) thread about swapping from 5 to 6...any part that the non-SVT needed to work with the 6-speed, you should expect to need to replace with the counterpart off the normal Zetec: http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=53374 I don't think me mentioned it, but I believe you'll need a regular Zetec flywheel and clutch (and your friend will most likely need your flywheel and clutch.) If you do a straight swap you should have all the parts needed on both cars, you'll just need to flip them.
