ok i know deto is bad but what exactly is it and how do i recognize it. i thought it was when it went boom and no more run lol. but ive recently been hearing ppl say things like " if you are experiencing deto..." which leads me to believe i misunderstood the original defenition.

Detonation (or preignition, pinging, etc) is when the air/fuel mixture ignites in the combustion chamber before the spark plug fires. This causes ridiculous pressures on the reciprocating ass'y (rods, pistons, rings, etc) because the piston is forced down or sideways before it is ready to. This uncontrolled motion causes the pings and knocks that the knock sensor or an aftermarket tool such as the J&S Safeguard can detect. Causes of detonation can be many, poor tune, too much boost, too advanced of timing, bad a/f mixture, intake charge too hot, etc. I'll let the experts chime in further, but this is the basic explanation

ok so now i know that its not the instant death of a motor and understand what it is but i dont think i know how to identify it. i dont believe i ever heard one pinging to know what to listen for.

I thought you have the Turbo now ? What tuning do you have ? If you even THINK you hear deto stop driving it

no im just kidding. i just found out today that the base tune for the kit is done by a guy name Paul from steeda.ca. i dont care who did it or how good they are though i know its not a vehicle specific tune. its just a general tune. every car is different even if they were back to back off the assembly line.

The reason i was asking about deto was because i was reading another thread talking about it and it made me see i didnt quite understand it.

I blew the motor in my Explorer the pinging was SO LOUD was looking for someplace suitable to pull over but she didn't make it :( scariest sound ever. Makes your heart drop when you realize what it is.

steeda ISNT well known for there tuning so be carefull , why the crap would a turbo co go to some one that has tuned maybe 10 foci boosted for a tune that amazes me

That was probably a rod knocking. Pinging doesn't cause the motor to blow at once.

Correction "pinging" will cause this engine to break up to 4 rods in less then a sec , If the Zetec engine with boost gets pinging/deto it WILL blow the engine all at once

You want to tell that to the 4 pistons laying in my garage.......

The STOCK ECU will pull timing ...but sometimes its not enough to save the motor... Hell my J&S could save the motor.

to an extent, the knock sensor ain't magic
