: My next Focus...

So I've owned an '02 black ZX3 and an '02 Infrared SVTF, and now I own an '07 Black 1500 Silverado.
I think I'm going into focus withdrawl..........

So....I also own a 1987 Fiero GT that is my Baby and is in showroom condition. Should I sell it and buy a used focus?

If I do get another focus, what should I look for in a used focus, and what should I stay away from like certain years, or engines?

Thanks
I hope to own another focus by the end of this year!

Don't sell the Fiero. It just became a classic car, and not so many of those survived the kit car rage, and accidents. There just hasn't been a lot of interest in Fieros yet to my knowledge, but I'd definitely keep it. In fact, I'd dry store the biaatch and keep her as close to mint as I could.

Come up with some other way to afford the Focus, or wait another year, and then get a Duratec Focus. The ST's seem to be the way to go, and with the rapid decline in resale value of American cars, you should have no problem picking one up.

Now, in California ( I'm originally from San DIego and will be back there next month) they had the 2.3L Duratec and the 2.3L PZEV.

Since the newer motors are the way to go, which one should I get?

2.0L D 2.3L D 2.3L PZ?

Actually, the Buick 3.8 SFI motor is the best motor for the Fiero if you're considering a transplant. It weighs about the same as the horrid (I hate those motors) 2.8 V6 and puts out much more power. The V8 conversion is difficult to work on, and abusive to the drivetrain which is not mentioned in any forum. The only problem I ran into with transplanting a 3.8 is that you must have a V6 car in order to get a proper air intake for the larger BOP motor. Those are much more rare to find intact in junkyards than the 2.5 4 cyl Fieros. The biggest problem for all motors is the wiring harness. The computer is housed on the firewall between the seats, and the wiring harness droops dangerously close to the exhaust manifold where it penetrates the firewall. Some sort of add-on insulation around this section of wiring is prudent. The bonuses far outweigh the drawbacks though, and mid-engine RWD cars are far superior in handling- even with outdated GM coil spring and A-arm designs. Carrol Shelby said- in reference to the Chrysler turbo cars "I can build a car to outrun the Fiero, but I can't build one to handle better than it."

I wish I had more research on hand to show you some of the original design Fiero kits (not Lambo or Ferarri copies) that were really impressive in style.

If I was planning to build a kit car these days, I'd go with Factory 5's GTM supercar. Although, I'd prefer not to use a GM motor like they do. I think the all aluminum 5.0 cammer crate engine from the Ford GT for around the same as the LS-7 crate would be a better bet.

Yeah.. we're jacking a thread, but that car does rock. It has AC available also as well as other creature comforts not usually found in a kit car.

Maybe after I get my electrical services company going to where I want it to go I'll have the extra cashflow (and shop) to build something like that [thumb]

I think the other kits were these that you were thinking of.

This one is the Finale

The SC3800 has always been a good swap but still difficult. The one that I helped with a few years back was a fairly straight forward swap and the was the Caddy 4.9L V-8 (not the north*). A few custom brackets, stock tranny, and some custom wiring and it was good to go! They are really ugly motors though.

YES the Finale!!!

That was it, I couldn't remember what the name was. That's a good looking kit, the best IMHO.

I was thinking the SFI version, some of the early motors had short height intakes as compared to the later motors and SC motors with longer runners. Not as much low end torque, but less of a profile to deal with. The valiant (but discontinued) Buick 3.0 or 3.3 would be a good swap too since it's basically a short deck 3.8, but you wouldn't get nearly the same power. It would only be something that someone like me who hates the 60˚ GM blocks would do. It just stinks that if you ever have to remove the timing cover you need two harmonic balancer pullers because the first one will have it's threads ripped out before you completely pull the balancer. There are several 60˚ GM's running around Missippi and Memphis with sanded down crank snouts from me.

The 4.9 was a much better Caddy motor than the N*. My mother had a N* in her 2003 that the company gave her- she had an option to buy at the end of the lease- but the service mechanic shook his head and told her directly "Lady, you don't want this car". It didn't even have 20k on it before I started hearing valvetrain problems when she was driving out. It is as legendary for crapola as the Quad4 and the early 3.4 DOHCs.

LOL thankfully V8-Archie put a Ford motor in a GT40 kit.... it would be horrible not to. Although I thought the Chrysler 440 in a Cobra kit was rather ineresting considering the light weight of that big block as compared to say Ford 460's. With aluminum heads it's not far from being as lightweight as the side oiler 427.

If I were ever to go with an engine swap, I'd go for a Series III SC 3800.

Just watch this video and it says it all!

You can pick up a Fiero in running condition with the V-6 for under $1000. You'll have to do alot of cosmetic work and take many trips to the junkyards, but it's fairly easy to work on. The engine compartment is a little cramped, but still you can get to most everything. The only bad part about the motor is if you need to pull it, It has to come out of the bottom.

I can't afford this stuff. I wish I could, but I don't even have a shop or a garage where I can work on this stuff. Sometime in the future, it's possible, but like the rest of the world I can only dream from the confines of my economic cage at the moment.

get an svt.....the STs are nice but for the money you can pick up an SVT out here in SoCal with about 40-45k for about 8k.

no st has a 6spd, no st has the suspension the svt has, no st is a HATCH!

the SVT > ST....however i already have a soon to be 6spd hatch and so i will be buying an ST for a DD....cuz i need the room and doors to haul my lazy mustang friends around since they cant afford gas to fuel their beasts....lame-os!
