: Car rescue, a.k.a "cars in barns"

Helped a local board member by trailering a car he picked up for an incredibly cheap price (how cheap I am not at liberty to say but lets just say that it is a days work). If he did not take it that night it was going to the scrapyard. I get there and it is a 1996 Taurus SHO which hasn't moved since Janyary of 2006 and leaks copious amounts of transmission fluid and doesn't go over 30 mph, hence why I was trailering it for him. Fluid leak appears to be from cooling lines.

The engine had the cam(s) spin, which unfortunately is common on these cars unless you get them welded but the engine in it was a replacement and when he started it there was zero smoke, but it did shuck the accessory belt.

Interior was damned near mint. Came with BBS wheels with new Blizzaks on them along with the stock wheels/tires.

Anyway, here are some pics. Besides rebuilding the tranny and a serious buffing, the car is in great shape, would have been a shame to scrap.

Man, car looks great. I've heard mixed things about the Yama-ford V8 in those, but I imagine it could be made into a killer sleeper. Makes a good story too.

I thought the V8 was made by ford on their own?

The V8 in the DN101 SHO was a Yamaha variant of the duratec motors. It was essentially a duratec V6 with an extra 2 cylinders grafted on and some extra work. Very neat car. If memory serves me correct, a later revision of this motor is now being used in the new Volvo V8 line. Very neat cars. Funny thing is that the 96-99 SHO almost never happened.

I'd say that in another 10-15 years, any SHO will be a pretty hot collector's item. It's an overlooked gem of Ford's old product line. Hmmmm, an 89-95 SHO may be easier to talk my wife into letting me buy as a fixer upper than a BMW, while still fun.

Beautiful car. Best of luck with bringing her back. It looks great, and I envy your buddy already. The SHO's were probably one of the coolest cars Ford ever did. It's a shame that Ford killed off the SHO with the update in 2000.

Just once, just once, I WANT TO BE THE GUY WHO FINDS A COOL CAR IN A DUSTY BARN !!! [bawling]

No lie, it seems like everyone I know has found a cool car - that runs - and paid peanuts for it.

My friend Matthew found an early 60's (I forget the year) Morris Minor (read here Mini) with right hand drive, original paint, and ONLY 34,000 miles on the ODO.

A wash job, a good coat of wax and some very minor mechanical fixes he sold it for almost $18K. He paid...$100 for it.

Just wonder when it will be my turn....[dunno] *sigh*

P.S. Way off topic - Lil PZEV my Beardie is 6 years old and is the coolest pet. I can put you in touch with a good breeder if you are interested.

This guy paid $200 for the car. Certainly isn't worth $18k but still a good investment.

Absolutely! Hats off to him/you for the find! The wheels alone are worth more than $200

And believe me those V8s sound great with exhaust!

The Taurus SHO is my favorite 90's car and my third favorite car overall.

I guess that is why I own One.

Even though it is way slower than my 91 SHO I would trade my 91 for a v8 SHO any day.

I paid $650 for my 91 1 year ago (also sitting in a Barn) and I have dumped over 2000 in it.

BTW that 96 has a few options on it that were only offered in 96 like the power passengers seat.

I forget the whole list though.

What happened to the age of sleepers? What kind of car is that? Holy Cow, what do you got under there? There is nothing cooler than smokin' anyone with your sleeper and seeing their face. R.I.P SVTC, we got lots of dropped jaws and mangled faces!!! I was looking at SHO's for a long time before I got a SVTC, really Ford needs to take a trip down sleeper lane and create some fast ass grocery go-getters like the SHO's of the early 90's.

I couldn't agree more.

About the closest thing we have today is the GTO. What a BLAND and uninspiring car. Great performance, but at a glance, it looks like an Impala.

I guess the WRX would qualify its first year since it had 4 doors, but then they sprouted wings and scoops.

If Ford would bring over the ST from Europe, it would certainly qualify if it came in a color other than safety orange.

well i think the v8s are slower than the v6s is because the v8s only came in an auto while the others came in manual. my girl used to have a v8 sho but that thing was nothin but problems. once u would get one thing fixed, something else would happen. but she loved that car. if we can, sometime down the line, we are gonna get another sho.

The V8s are slower than the V6 autos as well despite having 15 more hp and 20 lbs. ft of torque.

The third Gen taurus is heavier than any other gen taurus apart from th 08 5th gen.

Just like any car it is hit or miss on reliablility. Most owners have proven apart from the Cam issue, Coils, and Normal taurus trans. problems that the V8 car was fairly reliable.

After you get the cams welded that thing should run for 300K or more as long as you keep the rear coil packs rotated.
