: exhaust question

Well ladys and gentlmen i am proud to say I am finely the proud owner of a 2003 svt focus and i love this car. this is the funest car i have ever driven. but I have one question with the exhaust. the exhaust runs as follows if I am correct HEADER TO CAT TO FLEX PIPE TO RESONATOR TO MUFFLER AND THEN ANOTHER BOX ON BACK not sure what this does but would like to remove it. I was thinking of just putting a flowmaster in the muffler place and removing the box on the back then a high flow cat what did you guys think about that.

Put a MBRP on it if you want loud,Iput on on last week and love it.It took about 45 min by myself,but i left the flex and cat alone for now.

as far as the muffler goes, use a magnaflow or borla, then either a CFM high flow cat pipe or the RT high flow cat pipe. either will work fine, but i believe you are going to need either a tune or 02 sensor eliminator to keep from setting off the check eng light if you replace the cat. that should get you to the sound level you will like. good luck [thumb]

Texassvt has a good plan there. The exhaust system is very nice for NA apps. The only real improvement for performance is made with a high flow cat (HFC) or an Off road Pipe (ORP). From the cat back, it is a very high flow system and you wouldn't notice a gain in HP from a Borla or Magnaflow. I believe Tom has been working on something that should be able to give a bump in power but aside from that, the SVT is as good as it gets.
If your looking for a mod to give you a little bit more power and MUCH better driveability, a tune is the best thing you can do. You will get better millage, smoother powerband, and a lot more throttle response with a tune. I reccomend Tom at www.Focus-power.com . I have always been very pleased with his services, support, and products.

i say get a tune, b/c it really is a difference, not just a "butt dyno" difference, but it makes numbers, as opposed to the exhaust, you "think" it makes a difference. so for 450 bucks which you would almost spend on the borla, you can get a tune ans a shifter or tune and lower motor mount.

if i do a HFC will a check engine light come on or is it a bolt and go type thing and what do you think will happen if i remove the last muffler thing under the rear bumper and just run a pipe out.

No. The lower motor mount tightens your shifts but it is not related or required for a tune.
A tune is the single best improvement for an SVT. SVTs have a horrible stock tune and the aftermarket tunes give you more power, and more driveability. It makes the car ALOT more fun to drive.

so the exhaust that the svt comes with is a good setup but a high flow cat will make it better. is there any downside to the HFC

Well the RT HFC can crack occasionally but I have heard a lot of good things about them too. I don't own one so I cannot speak out of experience but from what I hear it is a win-win mod. You still have a clean running car, and you will make more torque and HP than stock. The downside is that it is more expensive than an ORP
An Off-Road-Pipe will usually make a little bit more power, but will many times hurt your bottom-end torque. Oh and an ORP is also illegal for street use although I doubt you'd ever get caught.
Basically your probably going to want a tune first. That will mak ethe car pull more smoothly and strongly. An ORP or HFC will also complement this nicely and give you a little bit of extra kick. Alot of people go with an intake too. The Stock SVT intake works well but the aftermarket ones CAN give you a tiny ammount of extra power (esp in the HOT months) and they certainly sound a lot better. I wanted my car to have a little bit of a rumble so that's why I bought my Cool-Flo. It doesn't seem top add any noticeable power, but it is better in the summer with heat soak resistance, and it sounds ANGRY when you get on it.
The motor mounts are nice because they will make the shifts much tighter but they also make the car vibrate more because they are stiffer. It's a tradeoff.

no, at least on the RT high flow cat pipe the stock sensor/02 sensor still has a bung to mount it. no bypass is needed

outlawfocus, i live in corpus christi... my RT HFC was a group buy, i would check out www.mcnewsautomotive.com that's where i got mine. also look at the for sale section, i think i saw one on there also, its used but may be in good condition. [cool]

Hmm I don't know if I'd buy a used RT HFC. They seem like they are thin walled enough and worry me brand new, never mind one that has some miles on it...

Texas also doesn't have nearly as nasty winters as most of the country but that's besides the point. It seems like it is a hit or miss thing where yours might last a long time or not. But the tubing on it is very thin, and I was not impressed by it's build when I looked at the pictures of a broken one.
I believe there is another HFC that is cheaper than the RT, and also has a nice curve on the flange that goes to the header that allows the cat to have a little more clearance from the oil pan. As I understand it, the RT sometimes requires you to flex the hell out of your header just to get it on. No wonder why it cracks...
