: Has anyone tried this?
jerseyal28 02-03-2007, 09:15 PM So today i was bored and i took off the snorkel on the air box, not the one that goes to the front of the car, just the air box. So now it sounds really good, i have a K&N in there and Dynomax exhaust. Now this could be just me, but it feels like it dogs out around 5500. Anyone done this? What have you noticed? Like i said it could just be me with the temps here in Jersey being as crazy as they are, or am i loosing power by doing this?
Focistang85 02-03-2007, 10:41 PM Maybe it's your DSI clip. IT should click over and get going around 5, 5 and a half.
SVT-SAGE 02-03-2007, 11:29 PM I doubt its making you lose power, its only a resonator, thats why its sounds so good when you take it off.
rockthezx3 02-04-2007, 12:29 AM When I took it off when I had my stock intake, it was a little louder, and I felt like I had a little tiny small bit more power in the high end. Then I got my new intake, and felt no difference. Hence why I think an intake is a waste of money on the SVT.
turbovation 02-04-2007, 12:32 AM There are no power gains to be had by removing the snorkal...it just makes it a little bit louder. I took the snorkal off for about a week and got tired of having it off..I think it sounds better stock. K&N panel filter will get you the same gains as a CAI.
avengerc4 02-04-2007, 01:34 AM I took it off on my old ZX3 when I had my K&N and I liked it a lot. I now have a CAI on the SVT and it came with it so I dunno if there would be a diff on the SVT or not.
03OrangeSVT 02-04-2007, 08:42 AM The SVT's been out 5 years.... there's nothing new that can be done with the stock components.
Focistang85 02-04-2007, 02:06 PM Nothing new? You can always find something new.
jerseyal28 02-04-2007, 09:44 PM yea i had a cai and felt no difference besides sucking up water cause it rains so much in Jersey. now that i've been driving it a few days it seems ok. was just a little curious what you guys thought.
CT SVT 02-05-2007, 09:58 AM When I took it off when I had my stock intake, it was a little louder, and I felt like I had a little tiny small bit more power in the high end. Then I got my new intake, and felt no difference. Hence why I think an intake is a waste of money on the SVT.
you cann't feel any power gain. a difference in power can be felt if you increase 30hp or more them you can feel a difference. you may of just felt better throttle respence.
Some really stupid questions:
What's involved in removing/replacing that resonator? Any special tools? I've had my SVTF about a week and am planning to get a drop in filter in the next couple days and was thinking about popping that resonator off at the same time.
I haven't looked at the airbox much, though...anything special needed to get it open? Anything need to be disconnected from it first? And once it's open, does the resonator just clip to the inside somehow or do I need a tool to get it off? Do I even need to open the airbox to remove the resonator? I just figured that since I'd have it open anyway...
And if I don't like how it sounds with it off, is it easy to get back on?
Sorry for the extremely basic nature of these questions, but I'm a gigantic newbie when it comes to cars. I doubt you could find somebody here who knows LESS than I do about this sort of thing. But if the price of knowledge is looking stupid up front, I'm more than willing to pay.
Not the first time I've made myself look stupid, and it sure won't be the last! [:p]
jaykirs 02-05-2007, 11:48 AM ^^^ Just pull the resonator out, no tools required. Also, you only need a screwdriver to get the intake lid off. Hope that helps.
jerseyal28 02-05-2007, 12:37 PM after i pulled it out i blocked the airway with a piece of plastic. sounds really good you can actually hear the intake suck in the air, sounds like i have an aftermarket cai on it.
mboren 02-05-2007, 03:38 PM I noticed that when I took off the resonator that yes I thought it did sound better!! But I truly think that you get to much air or something because it feels like it chokes the engine. Also with the snorkel off whenever I punch it I get a nasty gas smell like i'm flooding the engine. I know that the hole is the same but if you look at the box with the snorkel in it the snorkel leads all the way up will the MAF sensor. But with it off all there air is just roaming around in the air box and essentially you are getting to much air or something. I just know that with the snorkel in performance is better in the long run especially on the highways.
turbovation 02-05-2007, 06:36 PM Yeah felt a lil faster with the snorkel on....maybe it's because it's louder with it off and since its louder you expect it to be faster when it really is not. AEM and pipercross are the only intakes known to make any power gains and they are minimal I believe.
Also, to get the snorkel out just pull up REALLY hard on the airbox..it pops right out..but it takes some elbow grease.
jstuver 02-05-2007, 09:45 PM hmmm- i would doubt it would do anything - just get a aem cai- it sounds soooooo goood - its addictive
Focistang85 02-05-2007, 11:16 PM ^^I don't like the CAIs. My gf's brother decided to put a CAI on his neon and lower it, sucked water right in and bent some rods.
jstuver 02-05-2007, 11:47 PM well imo you would have to be an idiot to get hydrolocked- i mean seriously dense
Focistang85 02-05-2007, 11:57 PM Haha, it was a moment of weakness I suppose. He felt stupid.
jstuver 02-06-2007, 09:07 AM have you hard the aem cai- it is so frickin great sounding- better than i ever expected- i have one on my gli- and it doesnt sound anywhere near as good as my svt
avengerc4 02-06-2007, 09:48 AM it does sound good...I just hate having to avoid potholes cause you don't know how deep they are and shit. I'd just rather keep stock.
jstuver 02-06-2007, 01:12 PM we have some local roads flood here a lil but its really not a big deal if you maintain a steady rate thru a dip with water you are fine- just dont sit in one and then rev your enging and your ok-- to completely submerge you would have to have water above your foglights- when has that ever happened to you--prob never-
mboren 02-21-2007, 04:41 PM So I did some experimenting with this snorkel. I had it on and had it off and really this is no difference in performance but definetely in sound. It sounds great. But what I noticed and what I was asking earlier in the thread. I noticed that with the snorkel off getting on the highway it smells like rotten eggs. But with the snorkel on I don't get that smell. This is killing me and I can't figure out why I don't know if that snorkel messes with air and fuel timing and I am getting more fuel and it's burning in the catalytic converter or what?? Can someone help me out with this one, because I don't think that snorkel is just a silencer.
mtone132000 02-21-2007, 08:05 PM well you can spend like 20 bucks if you have a CAI and get a water dampener or something like that...but it keeps the water outta yo engine
