I believe alot of people swap the mazda 323 turbo engine in them.

as a matter of fact, yep. My bro did a NA build while our neighbor did a turbo build. They were a 1.9L but I think that was a SOHC engine. I remember that the NA car was within 2 lengths of the turbo car at the track, both running low 13's.

I actually ran one on the street once. Looked like a beated but apparently the guy had some bolt on's and he kept up with me through 2nd then I pulled away pretty far. Would be a good platform cause they are so small and light.

Its been done, there was a site for them a few years back, I"ll see if I can find it. The 1.9 was a pretty stout little engine. The 2.3 sohc was really well built as well.

That engine was not available in the escort. Tempo and Topaz as FWD
and Ranger/Mustang/MerkurXR4ti/Turbocoupe as RWD.

But yes it was a real well built engine.

I built a turbo setup for my friends car, it put down 280 whp at 20 psi with a
t3/t4. 12.6@114 on street tires and the rest of the motor is completely stock. We tuned it with an apexi S-AFC. The trans and axles are weak on those cars. He had some problems with that.

If I remember correctly, didn't the 1.9 come from mazda and then ford decided to stroke it out to the 2.3 and use it in their other vehicles?

i had a first generation ford escort gt. it had a 1.6L sohc engine. i rebuilt the motor way back in the day. i put in 1.9 liter gt injectors, 1.9 tps, 1.9 maf sensor and i took the head and cam off the 1.6 h.o engines and put it on mine. with headers and 2 1/4 inch exhaust. wish i had pictures1 it was black with black interior...but the seats has red pin stripes! slammed to the ground on 15 inch gt rims!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that car handled real good
p.s.
i can't remember if it had tokiko shocks.

Nope...all ford
The 1.8 was a mazda engine.

Finally someone points out the GT was not a 1.9!

The GT had a Mazda DOHC engine that made almost 130hp, the regular Escorts had the Ford 1.9 which made 88hp.

It's relatively easy to swap in the turbocharged Mazda engines from the 323, the 2nd generation Escort was based on the 323/Protege platform.

Ummm, sorry the 1.9 HO was in the escort gt in 1987 ( I had a roomate with one). The later body style ( 91 up , I think ) did have the even better Mazda engine, but the HO 1,9 made a hair over 100 HP, like 108 or so, if memory serves.

I know this, but the conversation seemed to be on the 2nd generation Escorts, the 1980s were the 1st generation. The title of this thread says "1989" but the direction seemed to be the 1991-1996 GT model.

While we're at it, I guess it's worth mentioning that the mid-'80s Escort GT could be had with a turbo engine, although even with the turbo I guess it wasn't much to write home about. [dunno]

does anyone have a pic of the old 19803-1986 turbo model escort ?

Equally desireable, but harder to find is the 1988 (I think) Rally edition Mazda 323.

It was turbocharged making about 115 HP. Lightened body and stiffer suspension.

It only lasted 1 year to meet FIA Rally homologation requirements. If memory serves me, fewer than 2000 units were sold in the US. At the time, a $13,000 price tag was a little steep.

I've also always had a soft spot for the Shelby GLH that competed with both the Mazda and the Escort.

Those are SOHC, it basically the same as the 3 gen's: EXCEPT the 2gen's are distributor, and doesn't have many vacuum hoses. 3 gen's are a terrible example of 98% emissionless hose city.

The Late 80's GT are extremely rare and hard to find.... like Unicorns!
It would take a miracle to find one.... and im not talking about online too.
