: Loud Turn Signal

Anybody know how I can mute these damn annoying turn signals? These have got to be the loudest blinkers I've ever heard. Even when I'm on the phone people know I'm driving! [mad]

You could just not use them [confused]. I know what you mean though, everyone comments on how loud mine are.

There is a thread on here someplace on how to track it down inside the steering column and stuff cotton in it to mute it. If you can find it it should be stickied into the how-to section....

You gotta love 'em. I see you are new to Focus. Trust me, you'll get used to them. Like many here did. I think Ford did this on purpose to let people who forget to turn off their signals know that their signals are on.

While waiting for one of those 3-4 minute stop lights.....keep the blinker off. Turn it on when the light turns green. Make a game of using it as little as possible, but yet signaling your intentions to other drivers. LOL...a way to tone down that little sucker would be good mod.

There's two ways to do it, one completely stops the clicking noise and the other reduces it to a reasonable volume. Since its a modern circuit-based system, there is no relay that clicks so Ford installed a small speaker in the turn signal/headlight beam control stalk. If you remove it and pop it open you'll see the speaker soldered to the board. Option one is desoldering the speaker from the board and completely removing it from the system, option two is jamming something in the hole in the speaker, a piece of a toothpick works well. I did the second option with the toothpick and the volume drops to a point where you can just notice it over the rest of the noises in the car.

Turn up the stereo. Thats how I fix problem noises.

Evil Genius has the right idea, lol. Believe it or not you do get used to it.

I was test driving a black '01 ZX3 while going car shopping last summer, and it had a reduced turn signal noise. However, there was nothing jammed in there to dampen the noise. So the original owner found some other way to do it.

I searched every crack and hole and couldn't see anything that would visibly make it quieter. Although there were subtle signs on that Focus that it had been in an accident. So maybe something got loosened in the collision. Who knows...

I have to say that I actually prefer the louder noise. It's one of the things that sticks out from all the other cars. Plus it also helps when I have the music up loud. But I understand how it can be annoying to some people. Best of luck in trying to find a solution.

How do you know there wasn't anything jammed in there? Did you remove the turn signal stalk and pry it apart to check? It takes about 15 minutes to pry the thing apart using three small flat-head screwdrivers and a LOT of patience...somehow I doubt you were able to do this while simultaneously taking the car for a test drive.

i too have to agree with EvilGenius turning the stereo up is the best fix :D

Haha, there has to be like 10 threads on this. You'll get used to it. Then you'll drive a car and be like "wtf, is the signal even on?"

Yes, I did all that while doing a headstand and using the pedals with my hands.

Anyway, I guess I misread the previous post, as to where this "speaker" should be located. Bottom line, I didn't see anything jammed in there "visibly". The Focus steering wheel isn't exactly covered up tightly. There's a gaping hole at the bottom, to leave room for the steering wheel tilt adjustment, as well as two other gaping holes, to allow for the turn signal and windshield wiper stalks to operate. All of these areas provide more than enough room for a nice peek.

I still don't think you understand...inside the turn signal stalk, completely covered under a plastic lid that is clipped into place and completely NOT visible without removing the steering wheel top cover, turn signal stalk and the aforementioned lid there is a tiny 1/4" wide speaker with an even tinier hole in the top that can be jammed with a piece of a wooden toothpick. Unless you dug that out and pried the lid off of the stalk there's no possible way to know if someone did what I was saying.

Either mine was modified by the previous owner, which I doub't, or I'm going deaf. I spend a bunch of money on a header to cover up such noises.

I like how this guy thinks. I might have to follow his advice.

Since the previous link to this How-To no longer works, I've taken the time to make a post of my own for it on the forums. Hope this helps!
