My SVT still has original plugs and original wires, so I figured I would try the free gap mod since I have already done all the other free mods you can do. I pulled them out, and they were gapped to right around .51. I gapped them all up to about .61 and took my car for a drive. It felt maybe a TAD bit smoother, but when I ran it hard it didn't seem to accelerate as quickly, and my top speed in first gear went from 43 MPH down to about 40.
Naturally, I wasn't too happy about this, so I pulled them out again and re-gapped them to .55. I ran it again hard, and it felt real nice. Acceleration felt better than it did to begin with, and it pulled harder and felt smoother all together. BUT...My car is still topping out at about 41 in first gear. I dunno why! Anybody have any idea?
That said, would you smart and experienced people out there recommend I leave my plugs gapped at .55? Or is it dumb to even mess with them since they're stock?

What do you mean "topping out at about 41 in first gear" you should hit the Rev limiter
Gapping a New set of plugs will show you some gain the old stock plugs and reagpping them wont do much and i doubt your feeling anything but you thoughts , Its very hard to feel 2 to 3 HP and to feel what your talking about would be in the range of 8 to 10HP/TQ loss , I guess a set of old plugs would do that but never seen it be that much
Change to a new set and you will have a slight gain in most cases if the coil is up to par but doubt you will feel your new gain

What I meant was that I'm hitting the rev limiter at 41 now as I was hitting the rev limiter at almost 44 before. Oh well. My car has about 29,000 miles on it with the original plugs. Would you recommend I get new plugs, or is that just going to be a waste of money? I plan on buying your tune in the next few weeks...would you take the spark gap into account, or is that too miniscule?

mine are gapped at .65 because of that speed demons coil. but i didnt really feel nothing, i never really check out my 1 gear top speed. imma check tomarrow lol :o)

I honestly dont see how changing your gap would lower yout top speed in 1st? Anyways, I have motorcraft AZFS22C plugs. most people swear by them. Have been great for me, mine are gapped at .35 but im also running 10PSI of boost.

Thanks for the input. Did any of you notice a decrease in MPG from a bigger gap? It might be that i have been riding my motor harder, but my MPG took a big down turn this fill up. I also heard a knocking coming from my motor for about 5 seconds. Haven't heard it again, though.
I had nothing but good things to say about using a .060 gap (including better mpg),
but...that was on a new set of plugs.
The copper Motorcraft plugs are cheap.
You can't go wrong giving them a try.
IIRC, I swapped in the coppers somewhere around 35,000 miles.
Gapping the stock platinum plugs takes some extra special care,
so you don't damage the electrode.
Gapping used stock platinum plugs is an even "iffier" propositiong.

OK thanks reverend gripshift, I'm gonna look into putting some copper plugs in, gapped of course, after I put in some royal purple for my next oil change in about 1000 miles. That should have Silvia running like a top.
