: need more power
11-10-2006, 01:25 AM
im new to the foucs seen and own a 02 svt and my current mods is intrak springs custom exhaust and a short shifter. i want more power but right know dont have much money.can anybody point me in the right direction and does anybody make cams or headers for the svt [?]
11-10-2006, 04:06 AM
You already have the best header you can put on, there are aftermarket cams tho
11-10-2006, 08:07 AM
Who makes Bump-sticks for the SVT? this is news to me...link maybe?
11-10-2006, 07:44 PM
my .02 would be to get an intake, and maybe a tune or two!!
11-10-2006, 08:04 PM
A tune (350.00) will be the best mod you can do to your SVT
11-12-2006, 01:38 AM
where can i get the tune from and what do you do to put it in.my r/t neon you had to send in your ecu and wright down the milage and vin with a list of mods and wait for about 3 weeks before you get it back.
11-12-2006, 02:17 AM
Get in touch with Tom (1turbofocus) he sells a device called the predator whic is preloaded with his custom svt tune, suited to your mods. it is self contained and plugs into the obd diagnostic port. there is no down time involved, and you get a much sweeter running car, i can't wait to get mine!

Other things to look into are the aem CAI availible at tirerack.com for $279, underdrive pulleys at ultrarev.com under $100, and a lightweight flywheel, probably a findanza 9lb flywheel at ultrarev.com as well, but only replace that when you are replacing the clutch to save on install
$ and of course the tune would be an excellent idea as well, also... I am a big time fan of a catalitic converter delete pipe or orp... but they are widely considered irresponsible and are illeagal in most states.
11-12-2006, 08:45 PM
Search around and you can find an intake for much cheaper.
Here's one for $226 brand new. --->AEM Cold-Air Intake (http://procarparts.stores.yahoo.net/fofo02svtaem8.html)

thanks for the info and your time.

A tune and a high-flow cat pipe are the biggest bolt-on performance gains you can get on these cars, I believe. An intake would probably come third, but it's first in the "that sounds awesome" category! [:D]
11-13-2006, 05:07 PM
Also, a Hi-flo cat and tune can't be seen. [:D]
11-15-2006, 12:39 AM
what is the lift and duration on the svtf cams and what would be the best spark plugs to put in my car.
11-15-2006, 12:31 PM
just gap the stockers out to .065 and work your way down till you dont have any misfires. its the same effect as aftermarket coils and wires. I agree with everyone else. a tune and a orp/high flow cat is what you need to be considering.

I pretty much have all the bolt-ons for the SVT.
You are looking to make power so...
Mods I recommend for power
Hi-flow Cat - Biggest gain in power that you'll see unless you get a tune or go forced induction. You'll be smog legal, it changes the exhaust tone and makes the exhaust slightly louder than stock.
Tune - I HIGHLY recommend going to 1turbofocus (aka Turbo Tom) for a tune. I made the mistake going to another company and had nothing but problems! If he offers a choice, I'd get the XCal 2 (not sure if he has the tune 100% like his Predator tune) only because of the ability to change some of the parameters yourself.
Other mods that make power, but I don't recommend
UDP - The verdict is still out on whether the UDP's cause engine damage, but I can't say I noticed much of a gain. Maybe 1-2 gain throughout the entire power band.
Cam gear - Not really worth the hassle to install. Sure it's nice being able to play with the powerband a little, but the few HP you'd gain isn't worth doing the install unless you have the motor torn apart already.
Exhaust - Not worth it unless you want to change the tone. You won't see much of a gain, if any.
Intake - I'm debating if the stock box is better than a CAI or short ram. It would be nice if someone had a different elbow than the stock one... I'd definately pick up a K&N filter. Adds some power, but short ram sucks in hot air under the hood and a CAI has the potential of sucking up water. Adds a nice sound under the hood under heavy load!
Mods you may consider to make the car more enjoyable.
Short throw shifter - Throws are considerably shorter. Also brings the height of the shifter down.
Rear engine/tranny mount - Makes the engine not move as much when under heavy load. Also stops that annoying banging sound when shifting hard from 1st to 2nd... I believe that's how my stock airbox got cracked! It adds a slight vibration at idle, but MUCH tolerable than all 3 mounts!
Throttle body - I have an aftermarket throttle body. I recommend it for the way the pedal feels, but it definately isn't worth the $250 or so they want for it. Maybe adds 1-2 horsepower. I know somebody was boring out the stock throttle bodies and selling them, but I'm unsure if they are still doing it.
Well, that's all I can think of right now... I think I mentioned all of my power adding mods. Definately consider getting a hi-flow cat, tune, short throw shifter and rear mount!

buy a different car,,,, just kidding

im thinking maybe a jackson supercharger next year if i have the money and maybe a port and polished head at the same time and the intake motor mounts and a racing clutch. my car is red and so i was thinking of powder coating the stock svt wheels black and red anodized lugs what do you guys think that would look.
11-17-2006, 12:44 AM
would look good. id get the mounts now... theres a package deal from cfm. then clutch so its nice and broken in by the time you go fi. then the head, with the JRSC last.
11-19-2006, 02:17 AM
my car lags a little when i take off so i have to push in the clutch a little and give it more gas. does anybody else have this problem and if so how do you fix it. it is driveing me crazy also when i launch hard my clutch fills like it is slipping is it supposed to do that or is my clutch going bad.
11-22-2006, 03:17 PM
is the Tom's predator tune that much better for the SVT?
11-22-2006, 06:34 PM
you need this
11-22-2006, 10:32 PM
You guys are giving him terrible advice...He said he wanted power but on a budget. Only one options fits that....lots and lots and lots of APC stickers. [deviltail]
Don't forget to get rid of the lunchbox
11-27-2006, 01:14 AM
I'll agree with going for the tune and high flow cat. Even though I dont have either, those are my next mods followed by the tranny/engine mount. And about the second problem. If im not mistaken, the need to ride the clutch out is due to the fact that our cars have NO torque and bog down really easily! About the "feeling like the clutch is slipping," I also think thats the LSD kicking in and perhaps the Traction control too.
Everyone else... call me out if im wrong, thats just my guess and personal experience.
1) If im not mistaken, the need to ride the clutch out is due to the fact that our cars have NO torque and bog down really easily!
From this site: http://myfordfocus.com/svt
Coletti’s team for the 2002 SVT Focus powertrain included his SVT engineers and Cosworth Technology.
The collaboration has produced a naturally aspirated engine that produces 170 hp at 7,000 rpm and 145 lb.-ft. of torque at 5,500 rpm.
The engine has developed 85 percent of its peak torque by the time it reaches 2,200 rpm.
The problem isn't torque...we have gobs more than other NA 4-bangers.
Check out the above quote:
"85 percent of its peak torque by the time it reaches 2,200 rpm"
^^^That's by all means, not weak in the torque department.
2) I also think thats the LSD kicking in
There is no LSD (stock) on the SVT.
Quaife and Torsen are available via the aftermarket though.
3) and perhaps the Traction control too.
Affirmative...but can be eliminated (for most cars) with a tune.
4) Everyone else... call me out if im wrong, thats just my guess and personal experience.
Seriously though, I had to jump on the "torque" comment.
Our cars are NOT...repeat NOT...weak in the torque department whatsoever.
Especially when compared to other cars in the same class, and same size/type (NA) engine.
The problems are much more closely related to gearing, TC, and factory ECU programming.

Actually, thanks for correcting me. Its always good to learn something new. Now I just gotta find who ever it is that told me my car has stock LSD and beat the crap out of him for making me sound stupid. So if its not LSD or a lack of torque, then what makes the car need re-pressing of the clutch to not allow it to bog down? Im tired of red light racing and getting killed form 0-30mph. (I mean after 30mph I rape but still its embarrassing when the guy says " dude, I had you off the line!") ERRRR!!!
then what makes the car need re-pressing of the clutch to not allow it to bog down?
That's TC rearing it's ugly head.
You're lucky...with an 03, there should be no problem getting a tuning unit to defeat the TC completely.
You do have a TC equipped car, don't you??

I guess i'll need to get a new flywheel and tune. I always have the TC off no matter if its wet or snowy, its just habit, ignition, seat belt, TC off. weird. But anyways, thanks for the input WD40. Now lets get back to the original poster's problems. lol
11-29-2006, 05:08 PM
i too have a 2002 svt. i've put on all the bolt-ons. most bang for the buck is your off road pipe and intake. i went with the steeda short ram. after that, i would opt for toms diablo predator tune. then a aluminum flywheel and better clutch. screaming demon coil and wires would be a good addition also. eventually a LSD would be nice.
11-30-2006, 12:54 AM
does anybody know the lift and duration of the svt cams and if they make aftermarket and were i can get them.
