: New to Forum and the Focus

Hello all, I drove an old Escort til I was hit by a girl running a red light. My dad surprised me with a brand new Black 2003 ZX5 Ford Focus(Comfort Level, automatic only option) as an early college graduation gift. I was wondering what suggestions you guys have on how to spend $200. I have just an automatic to work with, a shame since I loved driving a manual. I was thinking about a K and N air filter, and a filter for the cabin. Also a shortened antenna from http://www.zx3tuning.com/, if it won't reduce my reception by a lot.
Thanks for any advice given.
Edit: Also, whats the risk of losing warranty coverage?(high flow intake, udp, and catback)

[welcome] to the FF board, hope ya like it here. For a automatic, you could get a chip.

200 is a little tight to get a whole lot on. You could get a UDP, they are around 100. You can get some of the cheaper intakes for 200 (or less) as well.

Hi James, welcome aboard! I'm sure you'll find out more than you ever wanted to know about the Focus here. What kind of Escort did you have? I still have the car I owned before the Focus, which was a 94 Escort GT. I am always impressed when I've recently driven the Escort and then switch back to the Focus, how much nicer all-around the Focus is. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. [thumb]

It was a 2 door hatchback, 5 speed '91 Blue Escort Lx. Nothing special but I kept it in good shape over the years. Comically, my brother has the same exact model and color, except his is an automatic 4 door.
I'm very impressed with the Focus. I'm still in awe.
I also need suggestions on some vendors.

Here's a couple I've heard good things about:
There are many others, though. For manufacturers' sites, here a few:

Mate I'd say take that $200, take you old man out to dinner or lunch somewhere and go check out a football or basketball match or something, have fun with him and let him know how much you love him!! What an awesome Dad. My old man surprised me when I was looking for a new car too.. only had about $10k so he gave me another $10k and loaned me $7k (which I'm paying back interest free) so all up I could buy my little luxury Zetec model (ZX3). Naturally he arranged the fat discount on the car (on road costs for free) so it was cheaper for both of us!!!!

Welcome [wave] to the crazy world of the focus. I'll think you'll really enjoy it. Escort eh, still not a bad car that ford built. They have been proven to been very reliable and dependable for what it was. I agree with Sydney, you have all the time in the world to fix up your focus. Treat your dad out for being so generous. It'll probably bring tons of joy out of him for showing your generousity and will show that you respect him. Mine financed mine for me and I regret not doing anything for him, but I am detailing my parents cars for free, so I guess that's a fair trade.

Don't worry I got plans for my pop.
I'm looking for long term reliability in my car, is underdriving assecories safe?
Any downsides to switching to a higher air flow filter like K and Ns? Also, is the cabin air filter I'm looking for the pollen filter? The local dealer quoted $12.50 for one, and $30 for an odor filter.
I'm thinking I may try a high air flow intake kit, and getting a cat back exhaust in a few monthes.

If your gonna get a CAI or anything like that, skip the K&N. But it is going to be quite a while, you can if you want get one. I have one that I'm not going to be needing cuz I'm installing a volant CAI next week. If you want I could sell you my K&N for a reasonable price. It has only 6-7k on it. I haven't taken a look at it in a while but it should still have quite a few miles before it needs to be recharged.
