Oklahoma City's first autocross is this March 5th. Registration is now open.
I'm so excited to get this season started. I've been waiting for this since November! I'd like to see some more Focus owners show up for the OKC events. I've met SteelRain and Ataru out there along with eugenewatts, mr.squatch, and Mr.Pressurized as well.
The event info is posted on the OK SCCA website, and the pre-register option is under the Solo II menu on the left side of the page.
We'll come out if at all possible. I'd like to drive but i think with my mods they'd put me in some hard class. haha. ah well, as long as the weather is nicer than the last one i'm down
I'm hoping the weather will be something like yesterday and the last few weeks. I wonder how long this cold front is going to hang around. There's a driving school for March 11th, but you'll get a lot more seat time than you would at the regular events. Also, you only have to pay once since you don't register for classes. Just a thought.
What all modifications do you have? The cars are so spread out in different classes, you'd probably wouldn't even have many competitors - and they might not even be able to drive that well.
I am SOOOOOOO ready to get this season started!! I hope I have my wheels in time but stock or R Comp I'm ready to run. The Solo school for March has been canceled. 1st school is May 27th. I was talking with Jason, the Solo chairman about tires and he told me someone had broke into the trailer and stole a bunch of gear. I hope they catch the idots and we get to use them for cones. [mad]
I'm not certain if Jason is going to come out or not. I sent a PM to Shannon, but I never got a response (drove the 05 white ZX5). I'm ready to get my ass handed to me by Eric in his Neon ACR. I'm not sure how competitive I will be this season with Eric (actually, I'm quite sure my competition will not be with him). We'll see what happens.
I wonder if I'll be able to run with Mark Humphries in his 4-door Integra. Hopefully, I'll get to borrow my girlfriend's D50 to take some pictures. I just need a zoom lens, otherwise, there really won't be much point of shooting with an SLR.
I have always had good pics taken at the OKC events. Very clear and great angles. I will have my wheels mounted on Thursday and be ready to smoke some Mini booty on Sunday. [}]
I don't think Sean is shooting at the first event, so I would personally like something where I can control the exposure and shutter speed. However, my girlfriend is sounding very reluctant to letting me use the camera. Besides, we need a telephoto lens to get some good pictures.
Oh, and maybe a good professional photographer. []
I wish I had those kind of photography skills, but I don't believe so. I don't have the equipment, and I certainly don't have the experience. But hey, I never claimed I did. []
I think I saw Pat sign up, but he took out his name on the registry after some point. I don't know. Maybe it was never on there. Mark isn't racing his green 4-dr Integra in STS either, so it looks like just Eric and me to go at it. I guess I better get used to second place. Maybe I should register for G Stock, but I'm afraid some people might have a fit about that. I got crap for my STS and VF mount when I autocrossed in the NE Okla region. Truly my fault, and most people were nice and didn't care about it. However, I hate knowing someone is bothered by it. But I wish I could show them what the car is capable in "stock" form. Hell, with my MXs, I should be shaving off 1.5-2.0 seconds over my all-season Contis. It could make my car very potent in their region (was already faster than everyone but the Cooper S), but I don't know how well I'd do against your slicks and driving, Mike.
Mike, you should really consider the other NE OK region and the possibility of running against Brock and his Cooper S. When Brock ran on Falkens at the last event, I was only 2 seconds behind him on the all-season Conits. If I had better tires, I could've been much closer. Slicks... who knows? However, Brock may not be competing, so who knows? They don't even have a site as of now.
Tulsa is a bit too for me. If they had a Saturday event it would be ok, my folks live close to Tulsa and I would have Sunday to drive home and recoup but all day in the sun and then a 4 hour drive is a bit much.
I don't think you should run in STS for a shifter. The minimal differance in shift movement is not going to give you enough of an edge to matter. But thats just my 2 cents. To have to run against a fully prepared STS car because of a shifter is a bit crazy. [8]
Well, I could always register for GS, but a couple of people know I'm supposed to be in STS. I'll bet you, though, there are other illegal class cars out there. Well, they're trying to get the Stroud site which is only about an hour away from me (since I had to drive through Stroud to get to Drumright). It's not too bad of a drive, but I could understand not wanting to make the drive for sure.
I think we'll see how I stack up against Eric first. If I can't even come close to him, maybe I'll jump back into GS. Or maybe, I'll run in STX with a new high-flow cat and get first all the time. I really just want some competition that's fairly equal in my class. I don't care too much about who's driving what. I guess I can race in GS in "my mind." [8)]
I'm starting to get into the competition side of it now. It is fun no matter what. I would seriously consider reverting my car back to stock if I went into GS. As I said, though, I'm going to run against Eric to see how I do. Maybe I'll surprise myself, but I don't expect to get close to him in one event either. I'm a realist, and I think it's possible I may never catch him. And that's okay too. I'm just looking for the most competitive fun - that's all.
Definitely, though, there is still room for a lot of improvement, and that will be the focus of this season's driving.
Jason, are you going to be attending any of the events down here (besides March 5th, maybe like March 12th or a later event)?
I hope to get the ol JRSC out if the weather is good-or warm at least! Do they run if the coarse is wet-that would really help me in my class since I'll be runnin Goodyear Eagle F1's. Bad part is that in "street-mod" I'll be gettin my tail kicked!!! Those cars are AWD and have BIG boost!!! Just a good time to get out and work on some skills for the road coarses I hope to be on this summer..Wish I could go back to g-stock!! Our cars are pretty solid competitors in that group! Do you guys usually run one class or two?? I can still run novice cause I have never won it-even though I have a GS win-isn't that weird!? How many Foci are gonna be out?
I think you might qualify for STX instead of having to go all the way to Street Modified, Mike M. If it rains, they will still run the events. I always run two classes since it's too much fun that you'll regret not running more. []
If you show, it looks to either be three or four. I think Galen, mr.squatch, is coming out, but I'm not positive on that. If the weather is anything like today, we'll be in for a good time.
They will run rain or shine. Only lightning or the notorious Oklahoma twister will cancel an event. I haven't run in the rain yet but it looks like I might get a chance on Sunday. I hope not, I am rally looking forward to seeing how these Kumho V700's handle
Unless I am reading these rules wrong, which I have been known to do, your car with its modifications can still fall into the STX class without jumping to SM just because of the supercharger.
14.11 STX
A. The STX class expands the vehicle eligibility limits beyond those
specified for STS, and adds a limited number of allowed modifications.
The allowances are as follows:
1. All allowances in STS carry over, including street tires, emissions,
etc.
2. All restrictions regarding body type carry over.
3. Engine size allowance: up to 5.1, normally aspirated and 2.0,
forced induction (single turbo or supercharger).
4. Rim restriction: maximum width of 8", diameter/offset unrestricted.
Tire restriction: max width 245 mm.
5. Only standard (as defined in Section 12.4) limited slip differentials
(LSD) are allowed on AWD vehicles. For AWD vehicles
that did not come with any type of limited slip differential
(including center differential or transfer case), a single aftermarket
LSD may be added. 2WD vehicles may use any LSD
unit.
6. High flow catalytic converters are allowed, but must attach
within six inches of the original unit. Multiple catalytic converters
may be replaced by a single unit. The inlet of the
single replacement converter may be located no further
downstream than 6" along the piping flow path from the
original exit of the final OE converter.
7. Brake rotors may be replaced with any rotor of equal or
larger diameter made from a ferrous or aluminum alloy.
Calipers are unrestricted, but must mount to the original
attachment points. Drum brakes may be replaced with disk
brakes of a diameter equal to or greater than the inside diameter
of the standard drum part. Brake backing plates (dust
shields) may be modified the minimum amount necessary to
accommodate allowed alternate rotors and calipers.
Then all you need is to compare your times to other people's times, no matter what class everyone is in. If you are really getting into the "competition" side of it, then you would sell your Focus and buy a Mini because a fully prepped Focus in ANY class is not a contender no matter how you look at it.
My first year I ran GS because I just got my car and started in GS. I decided to finish the year in GS since I started there. I got my ass kicked EVERY EVENT by Chris Ketter in a Celica GT. Chris is a damn good driver, even better than Erik D, and he was driving one of the top cars in the class nationaly that was properly prepared and I stood NO chance of beating him.
After my first year I decided to do some mods to my car to make it more livable from day to day instead of just keeping it stock for GS where my car didn't stand a chance. So I did my mods and moved to STS. Last year Ketter didn't run GS at all and I probably could have won the GS championship again if I didn't do the mods and move to STS. Instead I got my ass kicked by THREE guys in STS and not just one in GS.
Would I have become a better driver if I stayed in GS? Probably not. Am I a better driver now than I was before the start of the season last year? Maybe a little.
If you revert back to GS, it sounds less like you are wanting the most competitive fun and more like you are wanting the best chance at winning the class. The best way to be competitive is to see how close your times come to another competitor from event to event, no matter what class they are in.
Just focus on learning how to drive better and not about which class to run, or where you will stand the best chance of winning, and it will be MUCH more enjoyable. Once you get wrapped up in the politics of it, there goes the fun. Remember the stink that some people made about the mods you had at last years event? Worrying about that isn't what autocross is about.
Jason, are you going to be attending any of the events down here (besides March 5th, maybe like March 12th or a later event)?
I'll probably make a few events. I might make this Sunday's event as I am off of work but I am not sure. I might be helping Eddie install some springs on his Focus then. Driving to OKC for every event is quite taxing. I have to get up at 5am to get to OKC in time to get prepared for the event and then I usually don't get home until about 7pm or later that day. From time to time it is alright, it just depends on if I am up to it.
I think that I will indeed enter the STX class-now that I know I can!!! Thanks to my fellow Focus drivers, I may at least have a chance to do some good and still have a good time!! I wish I would have paid a little more attention last year-they told me I HAD to run in SM, since the blower was added. Perhaps they were not as aware of the rules as Ilcowil!! Big thanks for the info there-hope to see you guys out there-looks like we need to check our wiper blades before we go!! Mine are probablt all weater cracked since its been so long since I had to use them!!!
I have a question though-is the Quiffe (did I spell that right?) differential legal in STX as "any after-market LS diff? Or is it not considered a limiter slip?
Mike M
Well, that's why I said if I was reading it correctly. I just didn't see it stated it had to be stock, but it would make sense when there's no discussion of boost controllers, blow-off valves, turbo size, etc. Sorry, Mike, for giving you a ray of hope then getting shot down.
Hey, thats allright on the rule thing Ilcowil! I don't know any rules at all anyway-now I at least know a few!!! I still think that the Focus is most competitive in GS-thats my opinion anyway!! I am still tryin to get a feel for the Focus-most of my track experience has been in the Lightning (and 4wheeler racing!). Hope to get better and have fun-probably won't ever win a SM group with my 223 h.p. 4 cyl motor!!! Still is a damn fun car to drive-daily and on tracks!!
Turned on my window wipers tonight-they still work!!!
You never know. Smaller cars are much more advantageous on the tighter courese of an autocross due to their shorter track. They don't have to travel out as far away from the cones through say a slalom and similar course layouts.
