I have a few questions I'm hoping somone here can help me with.
My wife's 08' focus is due for annual inspection and she has nearly
100K on it now so I'm going to replace the spark plugs this year, along with the coil boots.
Does this car have a PCV valve? If so, where is it located? (I can't find a haynes or chilton manual for her car yet?)
Also, does anyone make "modular strut assemblies" for her car yet? I'd like to replace the front struts, springs and bearing plates. NAPA had some for my 2000 and they look pretty much identical from what i can see?
The PCV valve is located on a breather on the intake manifold side of the block, under the intake manifold. You have to remove the manifold to access it. If you do decide to do this, get the PCV valve hose as well to replace while you are there as they like to fail.
As far as the struts you really just have to call around. The struts from the 00 are different than the 08. Its really not that hard to disassemble the struts with a little spring compressor and just do it yourself.
Thanks for the info! I really appreciate your response.
I'll have to look into the struts issue. They are not leaking, but sometimes when you go over a big dip in the road, there is a loud banging in the Right front, almost sounds like the strut or something is botteming out? It's very wierd, yet the suspension and steering components are all tight and when I push on the front end, it rebounds once and stops, which tells me the struts are still good.
This has been an issue for the past several thousand miles. I can't find any safety related issues with it so we've just been running it, but it does bother me because clearly something is not right, I just cannot locate what that something is.
Two things come to mind for your suspension noise. A common failure is the swaybar endlinks. They clunk going over bumps. Very common issue on the Focus. Get some Moogs with zerk fittings and never look back.
The other is a bad strut mount. They will make clunking sounds going over big bumps too. What you are describing sounds more like a strut mount.
My plan is to go ahead and replace the sway bar links and then see what we have. I am familiar with MOOG links, I actually installed some on my 00' earlier this year when a strut spring snapped and I had to replace both front strut assemblies.
Yes it's a candidate for replacing motor mounts. The problem with these mounts is it's hard to definitively diagnose without pulling the parts. Use OEM replacement for the upper right mount. Below is a link to me replacing all three mounts using OEM on a 2007 SES. Took $166 an 2 hours.
Also, the car has a vibration at idle....its makiing the steering wheel vibrate/rattle. Could this be part of the problem? I seem to recall threads that said the vibration at idle was an indicator that the right side (upper) engine mount was bad?
Thoughts? I was thinking of having my wife put the car in gear with the e brake on, and slightly engage the clutch so i can see how much the engine is moving?
I checked a few places and unfortunately it seems the main engine mount (upper right mount) is different from 07 to 08. Every place I checked has the Right upper mount for the $130 range, then the trans mount and torque strut (dog bone) are less.
Here goes more $$$ out the window! LOL, It's hard to believe this car has all these issues, it's still less than 5 yrs old with 96K.
I also need to put new struts and strut mounts on it yet!
Also, the Haynes manual for Focus reaches from 00-11 so check your local parts store and see if they can order you one, or here is the link to order yourself. http://www.haynes.com/products/productID/153
I was not aware of that (about the Haynes manual going from 00-2011, the haynes manual I have at home I think goes from 2000-2007 or something. I've been waiting for haynes or Chilton to come out with one for the 08' but I have not seen one yet at my local auto parts stores.
ok, sounds good, thanks, then I should be OK then with what i have. Thanks for the feedback
