New Member, Looking for a DD...

So, like a lot of people, I have had my share of financial ups and downs the past couple years. Some mistakes of my own doing, some from the poor economy.

Was out of work for almost a year. Kept myself barely getting by working for myself. Finally landed a decent job. However, this new job increased my commute from what used to be a 15 minutes drive to a 40 minutes drive. My only current rides right now are my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and my 2001 Suzuki SV650S. The Jeep, because of all the mods, and the size of the engine, is lucky to get 12 MPG on the highway LOL. It is costing me $20 a day to get to work and back. The motorcycle obviously does way better than that, but is not something I can drive in the winter and obviously when the weather does not permit.

I was looking around at some vehicles. I really want a hatchback. Was looking at some Mazda 3's. But I really am not a big fan of the interior. Although they are still an option. Also looked at some Civic coupes (yes, not a hatchback). Hatchback isn't a huge requirement. But anyone with a decent Civic with relatively low miles wants too much for one. I do not really want another car payment right now either, at least not one for 3+ years.

So I started taking a look at the Focus again. Not a huge fan of the early models. I remember knowing some people with the early models, 1999 to 2001 with a lot of problems.

Just looking for a DD, but something that can still be a little fun. And won't break my bank. Easy to work on. Reliable, as long as taken care of.

What should I take a look at when buying a Focus? Looking between 2004 and 2007, although a lot of the ones near 2007 seem to be at the same price as a Civic. Not looking to spend more than $6000. Preferably one around $4000 that I could do some upgrades to.

I really like this:

Minus the performance modifications. How hard would that be to replicate?

Please and thanks in advance for any responses.
