True ... you get to USE IT .... but you get to PAY FOR IT too !!

Yeah but the downsides of driving a beater are lower reliability

Not necessarily ... My 05 Toyota Corolla with 165,000 miles on it never needed a repair other than one headlight .... was never in the shop for a repair or warranty issue ... got the same exact mileage as the Focus, was on the original battery ... and never failed to start or work perfectly one time. Newer does not necessarily mean 'more reliable' .... In my case ... it meant exactly the opposite. Worst car deal I ever did .... and I've done DOZENS of car deals.
