is the SPI the best engine out there? of course not. Compare any of today's engines with a 20 year old design, and modern wins every time.

I am just saying that the SPI is not a dog. It is a strong, reliable engine. Easy to work on (though it rarely needs work) as glassmaker said. great gas milage. What more do you expect out of an econo-box?
