Thanks, I could not recall if the machined plate with the recessed screws on the oil pump actually mated up with the side of the block. but after looking at the pump (pictures mostly, my pump is stored somewhere in a pile of parts) and the gasket it looks like the block and the oil pump do not make contact on that surface.

I believe I have the caps in the right order. :-) #1 cap with the arrow pointing to the crank pulley. All Caps have arrow pointing towards crank pulley while going from #1 to #5 with #5 being next to the fly wheel.

I loosened the main cap and used a rubber mallet to gently tap the side of the main cap to see if it would "sit" more flush, but no movement. so re torqued down and will let it be.
