I recently replaced my leaking clutch master cylinder and was having a hell of a time getting any pedal pressure at all when I was done. I tried the pump and release method with a helper and a vacuum brake bleeder, Neither were giving any satisfactory results and were taking forever. The Ford preferred method is to use a reverse pressure bleed using a special ford tool but I made my own using stuff you can find anywhere.
- 35 CC syringe (any size will do)
- 3 FT 1/8 inch inner diameter vinyl tubing
- tip from a brake bleeding kit
Put the tubing on to the end of the syringe making sure that it is completely free of oil and is tight fitting. You don't want this thing to blow out under pressure. Put the bleeder tip on the other end also making sure it is tight.
First I filled the fluid reservoir to the top and then drew out fluid into the syringe and tube (This way I know it won't overflow when fluid is pushed back into it) Place the bleeder tip into the bleeder valve and hold it in place. Open the bleeder valve about 1/4 turn and then slowly inject the fluid into the clutch slave cylinder using enough pressure to move the fluid but not so much that the tubing blows off. There should be at least a few bubbles that come out the reservoir. Stop injecting fluid before the syringe is empty so you don't get air in the system. Close the bleeder valve without removing the tip or tubing so air is not introduced into the system. Two syringes full is all I needed for a firm clutch pedal. Start to finish the whole process takes 5 minutes or less. You will spend more time getting the battery out of the way to get to the bleeder valve.
