On an related note, it's about time to clean my filter for the first time. Any tips?

But I don't get that into it with cleaning it with gasoline. Depending on the make and construction, I'll use brake cleaner or just a simple car wash solution, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then dry on cardboard in the driveway for a few hours in direct sunlight and re-oil.
