note to anyone that ever has this problem with German cars or anything else that uses lug studs instead of lug nuts. LEAVE ONE IN when you're doing this.

I was working on a customers vehicle, an older Jetta and the passenger rear was stuck. this was on a lift and the wheels were about face level to me. I took a rubber mallet to the bottom front of the tire and the stupid thing flew off the hub... but for some reason my reflexes kicked in and I reached around as it flew off the hub. I ended up grabbing the face of the wheel assembly with my left hand twisted all the way around. it hurt a little bit... but I saved it and looked badass in the process. haha.
