That is whay I understood. I've never heard anything to suggest they were self training. When I bought a set of TPMS sensors from my Ford parts department to put on my snow tire rims they told me I would have to use the training tool to prevent the light from coming on (fortunately the tool was only about $34). So if the Ford service department says it doesn't auto-train I'm inclined to believe them.
