All of these clunking issues make me realize just how complex these cars are. My mom's 2002 Escape started clunking. Wheel bearings, strut mounts, and struts were only 2 years old (I replaced them
but they were cheap parts).
I replaced the sway bar links (usually the clunking culprit), outer tie rod ends (also bad...), ball joints (boots were destroyed), and even the intermediate shaft + half shaft (CV axle and intermediate shaft bearing were both bad).
Still clunked. I guess it's probably the strut or the mount even though they were only used for 1-2 years. I just gave up and said "It's annoying, but it shouldn't fall apart when you drive it."
