If you live in a city and stop hard and a lot, they're marginal at best. But if you commute on the highway ... 2 or 3 years of out a rear disc brake setup is about all you can expect.
EVERY vehicle we've had with rear discs has had to have new parking brake assembly, pads, rotors and calipers after 3 winters.
Drum brakes, while they don't provide the braking power, can last 10 years or so before they need major work.
My last car had no problems with the rear discs in 145000 miles and 11 winters.
