I just tested this for myself, and you are correct.
I started my car, then threw the keyfob out of the sunroof into the grass. Then I put the car into reverse and drove around the block. No warning of the keyfob being outside the car was given until I opened the door, then closed it again.
So much fail Ford! I take back what I said about the OP's significant other.
