To make it easier to get the new filter in, if you gently squeeze the top & bottom of the filter it decreases the size & provides a rounded leading edge as you insert it. Once you have the leading edge in the filter snaps back to its squared shape.
Did not have to remove fuse box doing it this way.
Who ever designed this should be shot.

An extra half inch or so would have made all the difference in the world.

Also, my factory filter appeared black/dirty, but didn't have that much loose dirt in it. So either it's really nasty after 10k miles or more likely, it's like one of the filters like Fram or Purolator offered a while back with "Activated Charcoal" for odor removal or some such. At first glance, they too look dirty even when new.
