The steering column wouldn't be the problem. The problem would be finding somewhere to mount a pump, tubing, and fitting the hydraulic steering gear in the car to go with a steering column. That's a lot of work. When the bugs are worked out of the electric assist, it should be fine. Everyone uses electric assist now, and everyone has problems too. Even worse for some luxury sport vehicles that have multiple assist settings. One problem I see with Ford's programming is that it seems that the electric assist is always assisting instead of cutting off once moving or sensing steering movement before assisting. At least that's what I'm reading into the way it acted on the highway- it might be designed to cut off or sense assist need, but something is screwing up keeping the assist on in problem vehicles.
