Today I mentioned what I thought the order process was to the salesperson and they replied telling me they can't do it that way. They told me all they can do is put a request for more Titanium Focuses and pretty much wait for one to come in that fits the criteria that I want, in other words they do not custom order. This is my first time purchasing a car so I'm not sure if this issue is more my fault or theirs. Either way, I am definitely thinking of going to a different dealer despite actually liking the salesperson I have been trying to deal with.

Should I go ahead and seek out another dealer or just wait and settle for the SEL? Any advice is appreciated, I feel stupid for not knowing what I'm doing or what's status quo and what isn't.
The order bank for 2012 is closed. That means you cannot go order a 2012. The factory shifts from making 2012's to 2013's in July. So, everything that shows up from May 14 or so to July 30 or so is a 2012 that Ford made according to their matrix. You can order a '13, but it won't get here till July ish. As I ordered in mid March and it is June tomorrow with no car, your wait would be no longer then mine has been. There are deals to be had on these cars that are built after the order bank is closed. The dealers want to move them and make room for '13 and cars they choose. If you find one with the options and features that you want, there is a good chance you can get a good price and/or nice incentives on the car. There are not too many deals on the '13 models yet, so they will likely be the more expensive car at this time.

It's your car and your money. NEVER settle for what a particular dealer has sitting on his lot that he wants to move. Dealers sell the cars that are on their lot, they don't necessarily sell the cars their customers want or need. Occasionally, the two align and the customer actually gets into the car they would have ordered in the first place.

Keep doing your research and shop a bunch of dealers in your area. Playing dealers against each other is actually kinda fun.
