Huh - that's an interesting take, and I actually sort of think I agree with you.
At first I thought it was pretty clear that it meant simply what it said, but in context it seems to be saying that premium fuel will give better performance than sub-87 octane fuel labelled as Regular, not better performance in general.
But hey, I think people should put in whatever fuel makes them happy. My BMW asks for 91, so that's what I use (actually I use 93 because I can't find 91 here). I think when I get the Focus I'll use 87, because IMO that's what it seems to be asking for.
