What's wrong with the transmission, I am especially worried when a mechanic says things are shot without having clear and concrete info about what's wrong.
Try to find out what is not working, if your lucky it might just be a quick fix, have seen that before, and would save a chunck of money instead of just taking word for granted.
I read your prevous post too, are you sure it might not be a solenoid in this case as I've heard from Lentech that if the solenoid's bad you won't get the gear working, in that case it would be cheap to repair, if on the other hand it's the gear ring, then it needs to be openend and replaced
